I’m still getting mail in my maiden name, and I honestly just change it as it rolls in. I went to the SS office and DMV and got all that taken care of. After that I just changed the big stuff like life insurance policy (big thing I forgot), insurance, and bank/credit card accounts.

Then I remembered magazines and things like that. Like I said, whatever rolls in I change then.

Yeah I mean they have name change kits and stuff, but I find them unnecessary. It’s not like you won’t get your mail or can’t change your maiden to your married name after the fact. Every physical letter you get usually has a place to change your name and addresses.

Any place you have accounts online I would just start figuring those out and changing that so everything matches.

Just a questions are you going anywhere outside the country for your honeymoon? I only ask because, of course, you will probably want to leave your name as your maiden name if you are leaving within 9 weeks of your wedding. It takes a bit of time to change your name on your passport. If this isn’t a big deal then just change your passport after you have gotten your new social security card and everything.

@SweetMelissa429:  Did you recently get your passport? If it was less than a year ago you can fill out the form and get your name changed on your passport for free. Otherwise you have to pay the passport fee all over again.

@SweetMelissa429:  One thing you might want to check on is if you can change your name at the SS office and DMV on the same day. I didnt know that and had to wait 24 hours after I changed it at the SS office before I could go to the DMV so I had to take another day off work 🙁

Yeah after the super important stuff like driving licence, I just changed stuff as the letters came in. I have a feeling its a lot easier to do name changes in the UK than US though! The only major thing Ive had to change is my DL.If we ever encounter any problems, I have photo ID, birth certificate and marriage certificate.

It was actually an easier and more relaxed process than I expected. First stop, social security office. Bring your marriage license and your old ss card. From there, you can visit the DMV, then your bank. I actually found that both the bank and the DMV only needed my old ID and the marriage license; neither asked for my new ss card. Last thing I made sure to do was call my credit card company for a new card and inform the insurance company to change my name and my status to “married” (DH was already on the same policies), and I still haven’t gotten a new passport because I have no plans to leave the country. This all happened over several months.

I already had a new email and new business cards for work arranged before the wedding as well, but that just requires a quick email to IT and to purchasing.

The rest kind of gets changed over time. Subscriptions get updated when you go to renew them, utilities when you happen to call in to pay a bill or make changes to the account, prescriptions and medical forms when you visit the doctor or have new scripts written, etc.

Yeah its a very easy process, don’t sweat it.  All I needed was my marriage certificate, took that to the SS office where they gave me a print-out as proof (so I didn’t need to wait for my card to come in the mail), then went to the DMV with that, where they changed it on my DL and voter reg at the same time (and they could’ve also changed it on my car reg & title if I’d dug out my title and filled out a form), then I took my new DL to the bank.  Easy peasy.
