I can relate. I’m currently an engineering student graduating in May 2014. My fiancé works full time as a Computer Engineer for Wall Street, so he make a decent amount of money. We decided to wait until I graduate to get married because of the financial implications filing as a married couple would have.

If you do get married before getting your Fall aid, depending on how much your guy makes, it could significantly impact need-based aid and scholarships, just as your parents income did. If you don’t mind waiting, it would probably be best to wait. However, it depends on the aid you plan on getting. It would probably be best to talk to a financial aid employee at your college.

Before we got married, I was going to school full time and working part time.  It still wasn’t enough to pay my bills (even with student loans) so I had to take out extra Sallie Mae loans.

Now that we are married Darling Husband makes enough to support both of us so I am lucky enough to finish my senior year without worrying about a job.

@Leelee26:  Truthfully you should be alright. It sounds like you’re having a rough time financially so I can’t imagine it would impact your package too much. Usually it’s only a problem if your SO makes a lot. And I can SO understand you wanting to move your relationship forward! Four years is a long time! We will be getting married before I go to medical school (assuming I get in! Lol) because it will be 5 years at that point and it is worth it to us.

You should be ok. As an independent undergrad you get quite a bit in loans, especially as a Junior/Senior. I’m allotted $6,500 as a maximum, so if you can go to a state school it shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t fret too much and talk to a financial aid advisor 🙂
