If Ohio recognized common law I’d imagine we would’ve been fine with that for the rest of our lives.

I have yet to see any benefits from being married aside from the fact that we’re legally married.

Common law is pretty easy to get into but requires the same amount of work to get out of as a marriage.  You basically need to get a divorce even if you never officially got married.

You basically say that your married anyway to become common law so the only real difference to me is not having a wedding.  You can’t live with someone and say they are your BF and end up common law married.  You have to say that they are your husband and file taxes together and everything to be common law married.

To me it seems like about the same thing.

I like the symbolism behind marriage. However, from a legal point of view I’d prefer being my FI’s common law partner simply because I’m not a big fan of spousal support. If anything bad happens to our relationship, it’ll be much easier than getting divorced. One of the big differences between being married and common law (where I live anyways) is that common law partners do not owe spousal support to the other.

We would rather be married. We share a pretty traditional view on marriage, and believe certain things should only be done in the context of marriage (live together, share finances) so we probably couldn’t be common-law anyway (doesn’t that require you live together and whatnot?). But we’re religious, so it was also important for us to make that commitment in front of God. I suppose there are tax benefits and whatnot, but that wasn’t part of our decision.

I wouldn’t mind being common law married. It’s like eloping without having your family guilt trip you for the rest of your lives!
