I’ve been buying most of my maternity clothes on sale online, but for a special event I would consider going somewhere you can try things on (so Motherhood Maternity… Not sure what else). I’ve found things I think will be flattering aren’t, etc, and online returns can be annoying (and I’m lazy).

I haven’t needed fancy things, but I got a few dresses for work from Gap, and a more casual dress from Old Navy. The Gap dresses are more flattering. Nothing I’ve bought is fancy wedding appropriate, though.

HelloBlondie :  I just got a ton of stuff at Motherhood Maternity (just basics like leggings, fitted ruched dresses, tops, and a pair of jeans). I would check out Pea in the Pod, H&M maternity, and Nordstrom–all of which have a ton of cute cocktail dresses. If you like Free People check out Fillyboo Maternity (at nordstrom). I wear a ton of Free People stuff (some stuff I can still get away with now actually) and I’m in love with their dresses–very boho.

I got my baby shower dress at ASOS and loved it! I also got a few cute special occasion dresses at Seraphine. I got a super cute sparkly Christmas dress there!

HelloBlondie :  pink blush maternity, but I think ASOS is better for formal stuff. I wore a pink blush maternity dress for a recent cocktail attire wedding. I love their stuff and they have lots of casual stuff, too! Look for sales and coupons often

I went on a long hunt for a special occasion dress for this summer. I ordered five dresses from ASOS and struck out on all of them. They were comically bad. I also tried a Stitch Fix, but the dresses they sent were too casual for what I wanted. I bought some more casual dresses on Gilt, but I didn’t love the cocktail options. I ended up getting this dress: http://www.tiffanyrose.com/us/maternity/clothing/ASDMG/Anna-Maternity-Shift-Dress-Midnight-Garden.html

It was a little pricey for maternity, but I knew I’d wear it several times this summer, and I should be able to wear it next pregnancy as well. There’s also no ruching, so I think it might even work in regular life. I’m really happy with it! Good luck wih the search!

I’ve been ordering maternity from Pink Blush. If you follow them on Instagram, there is always a sale.

Do you have a nearby second hand store specifically for maternity and kid items? We have one and they have a very nice selection of formal dresses and trendy outfits. It’s all second hand, so it’s super cheap.

I also recommend non-maternity dresses with high waists – I purchased a regular maxi dress from marshall’s and it has been amazing with the bump (31 weeks). I also still manage to wear some empire waist dresses from Macy’s (that I bought a few years ago). But, that all depends on your bump size.

jcor :  this! I wore non maternity empire waisted dresses/maxi dresses up until I delivered.  One dress took me from a casual wedding (maxi dress) in week 16 until 2 days before delivery at 38 weeks.  I can wear it normally now 10 months postpartum.  And I had a huge belly at the end and didn’t really show until week 22, and then just barely!

I second Nordstrom, and also love Thyme Maternity for dresses!

I would try getting a wrap dress not from the maternity section then you can wear it after baby is here. My maternity advisor at my o.b. office recommended one in black and just change the accessories to dress it up or down. She also recommend h &m maternity for low cost options.

I am due in December, and have bought some cute dresses at Motherhood Maternity that would work for weddings, and other events you’ve mentioned. You also may be able to find skirts and blouses that could work for some of those work funcations. I have found that the stores don’t always have a ton in stock, so go online… and look for sales! I have found some great items on clearance and either spend a lot to get free shipping, or they offer free shipping every once in awhile.

Asos should be good too, and Pink Blush, from what others have mentioned. I have only bought clothes from Target, MM, and stopped at my local Clothes Mentor to see what they have.

futuremardinly :  +1…. as you can never go wrong with a black dress!
