Can you do something in the middle like go back at 10-12 weeks then part time for a while? I wouldn’t have been ready to go back to work as early as 8-9 weeks, but it would be nice to transition back gradually rather than going right into full time. I took 12 weeks off then took Fridays off for the next 10 weeks. It was okay but I would have liked to have more time off.

Also if you are planning to breastfeed I would take that into account. You might want more time with your baby earlier on. They eat so often the first few months.

I think this is tough, but with an impending promotion I would probably go with 8-9 weeks and then go part time. But that depends a lot on the details of your situation that we don’t know. By the time the baby is born you will probably be really getting into a groove with your new job responsibilites (assumption), and I don’t know what the impact of taking 13 straight weeks off will really be. I certainly think that a child is more important than any job, but then there is the reality of bills, career progress, etc. I really do think that taking the time off can be a setback, which is so unfortunate.

RedWine13:  Working from home some might really help! You probably won’t be able to get as much done as before baby but you’ll be able to stay productive and feed baby more easily.

RedWine13:  I did a whole 12 weeks but that was because I didnt have a very smooth delivery and my son got sent to childrens hospital for 2 1/2 weeks. I had only planned on taking 6 weeks but after that happened, I went the whole 12 weeks and since I did that with my first pregnancy, I am doing it with my current pregnancy as well.

RedWine13:  Thank you and good luck with your labor and delivery. I would strongly suggest to any working mother to always allow yourself a few extra weeks of ML than the minimum because you never know how things are going to go.
