Generally I think it’s the same as Maid of Honor.  But if someone is married or a mother they technically are no longer a "maid[en]".  I’m actually having both, my BFF is Maid and my sister is Matron.  This is partially motivated by the fact that it’s too difficult to choose one for Maid/Matron of Honor.

i have both a maid of honor and a matron of honor. i see them as the same role, except for that the matron is married–my sister is my maid of honor and my best friend (who married on feb. 21, 2009) is my matron.

I am glad you posted this cause I was calling my sister, who is married, my Maid of Honor. I think I need to change it to Matron of Honor! Opps!
