I went to Maui in 2007 and stayed at the Royal Lahaina Resort. It wasn’t super pricey and it was clean!  We stayed in a villa type accomodation, but shortly after our stay they renovated and the villas (from what I’ve heard) no longer exist. It’s now a hotel tower, but I’m guessing it’s still very nice. There were 3 pools, tennis courts and beach access plus a restaurant that we went to many times for breakfast! They host a large luau, but to be honest, that was the only thing I wasn’t super impressed with. If you decide to stay there, go to the other large luau on the island ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m hoping you will love Maui just as much as I did! Have a fantastic honeymoon!

We stayed at a condo called Hale Napili and loved it! It’s located on a private bay (shared with other condos) with some pretty great snorkeling. It’s a bit further north than some of the other major hotel areas on the west (Lahaina) side which cuts down on the crowds. It has the basic amenities but is not a luxury hotel. If you’re looking for a condo at moderate price range it’s a great find!

Maui is my second home (almost:) and I honeymooned there too in January. Both suggestions so far are great. I’m partial to Napili because I love the beach so much but you can’t go wrong in either of those places. Just stay out of the Kihei area, no matter what! It’s cheap but totally disgusting.

We are going to Maui as well for our honeymoon and while it is a touch more expensive we are staying at the Grand Wailea (sp?).  I have been there before (to that exact resort) and LOVED every minute of it.  I cant wait to experience it at a newlywed.

FYI – we got a good deal using Costco!  May want to check it out no matter which hotel you choose!

The Grand Wailea is fantastic, but sometimes a bit out of the budget.  I stayed at the Kahana Outrigger and loved it because it was soooo close to the ocean and was nicely appointed.  It’s a two-level condo, though, so it might be a bit too much space for a honeymooning couple.  It worked out great for my sister, her husband, his groomsman and myself.  We all had bedrooms to ourselves with plenty of room to spare.  Check out http://www.chasenrainbows.com/.  They manage the Kahana Outrigger and have LOTS of lovely places to choose from which might suit you.  They were a joy to work with, also.

@jneden: We are getting married at the Grand Wailea chapel so we are spending the first half of our honeymoon at that resort. We have also booked the Hotel Hana which my family says is the most romantic hotel on the entire island! ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope this helps!

We’re going to the Grand Wailea, too! Do you have advice or tips for the resort? Neither of us have stayed there or been to Maui at all!

Grand Wailea tip…get the breakfast buffet!

Now, I haven’t been there in years (I think I was there about 12 years ago) but from what I have heard it is still an amazing breakfast buffet!  We got it included in our Costco package and plan to stock up on breakfast with the hopes of skipping lunch (or just eating light!) that way we can splurge in dinners! ๐Ÿ™‚

We did not stay at the Grand Wailea, but we did visit and had wedding photos taken there.  I don’t have any personal experience to draw from, but when I was researching Maui for our trip, I saw a lot of literature, videos and reviews about Grand Wailea that led me to believe that it’s probably the most lush hotel on the island.  The grounds were just beautiful!! They made an amazing backdrop to my sister’s wedding pictures.

My favorite (human constructed) place when I was in Maui was Lei Lani’s on the Beach, which is right there on Kaanapali Beach.  They had great burgers and this amazing cocktail called Lava Flow.  See http://www.leilanis.com/
