So my husband and I are having our wedding ceremony in Maui. I was quoted around $2,600 for bridal bouquets, boutonnniere and aisle. This does not include the ones for the tables, which I think it ridiculously expensive, so I was thinking of getting the fabric type instead, or make our own once we get to Maui. If we do decided on makig our bouquets, I want to know if there are places to get beautiful flowers. Our wedding will be held at Honua Kai resort and spa. If you know anything about Maui, please let me know if it’s easy or difficult to get flowers around that area. Thanks.

What sort of flowers are you looking at? Anything that isn’t grown locally is going to cost more because of the Island’s location. So if you are after roses then they will be expensive but if you want frangipanis then they will be cheaper because they grow locally.

j_jaye: Hello! Here’s a link of an old thread I posted.
http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/diy-weddingg-bouquet/ these are the examples of flowers that I’m interested in, or at least the colors. So basically, I’ve decided to MAYBE DIY some bouquets, maybe just mine and my bridesmaid, or maybe I’ll just use silk flowers for my bridesmaids and use real flowers for mine, so it doesn’t matter if it cost a little bit, as long as it won’t cost me $2,600. I was also thinking of using silk flowers for the boutonnières, so this will save me a couple of thousands! anyway, I was just wondering if it’s easy to find flower shops with those kind of flowers?

Mrs.DK: I think you might be in for a hefty bill if those are the flowers you want. They will more than likely have to be flown in which adds to the cost. Things in Hawaii are more expensive in general than mainland USA due to this fact. Have you considered look at different flowers or talking to a florist and asking for local flowers which look similar?

This is probably the reason why I was quoted $2,600 for bouquets and boutonnieres + $850 for the tables etc. I was thinking of just keeping the $850 for the tables. I know that it won’t be expensive to just make one bridal bouquet out of real flowers. Bridesmaid bouquets and boutennieres will probably be made out of silk/synthetic flowers, which I can order online for like $10 each for a bouquet. Anyway, making one bouquet using real flowers will surely save me a lot of money, so what I’m really worried about is that if there are stores that have the flowers that I’m interested in.

Mrs.DK: most will have roses but if you want a specific colour or a specific flower you will probably have to order them which again will probably cost more as a special order. This is because they will be only ordering enough for you rather than a bulk order.

If you want to go the silk flowers route, I ordered my bridal and bridesmaids bouquets from Morgann Hill Designs on etsy (http://www.etsy.com/au/shop/braggingbags) and I ordered silk flowers online to make bouttonierres and centrepieces. I knew the bouquets would be photographed in more detail so I didn’t mind spending a bit extra on those. Some of her bouquets might fit in with your vision (for some reason her flowers and bouquets tab has nothing under it, but if you search her store for ‘bouquet’ you can see the different varieties.) It probably wouldn’t be cost effective to use this store for all of your flowers.

j_jaye: thanks for the idea! Also, my wedding planner made a mistake. I thought it was odd that the reception flowers and linens were only going to cost $850, while the ceremony flowers were going to cost $2,600! She said it’s actually $950 And not $2,600. Whew!
Daffadowndilly: that’s a beautiful bouquet! That’s very close to how I want it! Probably with a little difference in color, but very close. Thanks!

We stayed at Honua Kai when we were there in Maui for our wedding!
Who quoted you that price? That’s pretty outrageous! I’ve heard a lot of people go to Whole Foods or Costco for flowers. Also check out Atrium Design Works (they are a wholesale supplier). My day of coordinator also does florals. Her name is Melissa and her business is called Opihi Love. She was really reasonable. 🙂

nixietink: how was Honua Kai? My planner actually made a mistake with the quote, and told me that it’s around $950 for 5 bouquts, boutonnières, aisle and other linens etc. so that made me feel a lot better, although I still am interested in making my own flowers maybe. are those stores close by?

nixietink: just curious, but do you mind telling how much you paid your coordinator?

Mrs.DK: Oh whew! That’s much better! Costco is right by the airport and I think Whole Foods is also by the aiport, too. Honua Kai is great!! We had an amazing stay there.
