Alllllright. So right now, as far as reservations and such go, we are booked for the Honeymoon Package for 6 nights at a resort in Aruba. That package (not all-inclusive) is just over $2400. They didn’t require any deposit so we haven’t actually paid anything yet.
We haven’t booked our flights yet, but after looking around a bit, it’s looking like for the two of us, our flights after fees and such will be around $1300-$1600. SO add that up, and before food and entertainment (breakfast IS provided by resort), we’re looking at close to $4,000. Factor in food, entertainment, cab rides, etc. etc. and I’m thinking it will get close to $5,000.
Our *original* idea was to rent one of those luxury cabins/chalets in the smokey mountains, like in the Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg. If you follow the link here (http://rental.cabinsofthesmokymountains.com/gatlinburg-cabin-rental/Passion_Peak.html) you can look through some photos and such- they’re pretty swanky really.
And most have hot tubs on the porches overlooking the mountains. Both Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are kinda nice- lots of restaurants, entertainment, and quaint southern charm.
Anyway, this idea is still sort of appealing, I guess I just kinda steared away from it because- I’m from Kentucky and he’s (sort of) from Tennessee…so it just felt so….local. I always though of my honeymoon as this big extravagant getaway ya know?
As far as pricing goes- we probably would just drive down there (from either Southern IN or my parent’s house in KY) so, let’s say $100 for gas (there and back)…the cabins range in price from about $175/night-$500/night, soooo say we picked one around $300/night. We could do 7 nights (1 more night than in Aruba) for $2100 before taxes and fees.
So, not that much less than the Aruba resort, but obviously travel expenses are way way less. So, my estimate for the TN trip, with food and entertainment, would probaby be around $3,000. So, around $2,000 less than the Aruba trip.
This is coming up really because of:
1. The economy. Let’s face it, it sucks. I feel kinda guilty for planning this extravagant honeymoon in times like these.
2. Our budget – I’ve been updating it here lately and ladies and gentleman, it is not pretty. Including the $5,000 estimate for the honeymoon, it’s at over $20,000 right now. I know that’s not high to some people but, since we’re paying for about half of it…it’s a little mind-boggling.
2. Travel stresses me out sometimes. Especially in ‘strange’ places where I have to find my way around, understand a different language and culture, play every little thing out, etc. etc.
ANYWAY…I guess now it’s the struggle between- tropical island far away but expensive vs. local mountain getaway and less travel fees…
Thoughts on this??
*note* Our wedding is July 18, 2009. We’d prob. be looking to check in to wherever we’re going on Monday, July 20th and then checking out on the 26th or 27th.
