1cat :  It doesnt have to be!  Here’s a marquise cut for only $75, http://www.jtv.com/tanzanite-min-.75ct-10x5mm-marquise/1426868.html and you can find white gold settings on ebay for really good prices too.  I can’t remember how much my stone was (less than 100 I think), but the setting was $150, and $40 to set so less than $300 all said and done.

 We incorporated blue topaz into our wedding bands. I have a lot of aquamarine jewelry and I really love that color too!

This was a birthday gift though not my birthstone, just a stone I love. 14k yellow gold, antique style setting with lots of filigree. Hard to tell but it’s quite domed shaped on the sides.
