AquamarineQueen:  I just got back from Riviera Maya, SO and I got some great deals on Groupon and stayed at a 5-star resort. I felt that Mexico was perfectly safe in the tourist areas. I know the news makes Mexico seem unsafe, but tourism is a huge source of income for that country, so they really focus on making sure people enjoy themselves. However, I would’t have stayed at any of the more “budget” places. We stayed at one of the nicer hotels and they can still rip you off on the drinks and food, watering down the alcohol and such. I have been to the Bahamas 4 times (Atlantis), Grand Cayman and Jamaica, and Riviera Maya was wonderful and much less expensive. I say look on Groupon and see what you can find, feel free to PM me if you could use some tips on using Groupon travel.

There are a couple factors that contribute to your decision like where your flying from. From KC, where I’m located, it’s cheaper to fly to MX but more expensive to stay, so it depends on flight costs, even though you could probably get those for free if you open a credit card with bonus miles (that’s a whole other topic).

Regarding the water temperature, it depends on when you go. As far as the beaches, we’ve been to MX but haven’t been to the Dominican Republic, but were in the Bahamas several years ago and the water was SO much nicer than it was in Mexico. Dominican Republic has some of the best beaches in the world, and the water pictures, even the non-professional ones are incredible. We’re planning a DW to the DR next year so it’s obvious which one I prefer. 🙂 I would DEFINITELY reccomend working with a travel agent, they can get you a better deal than you can find on expedia and make the whole trip planning experience so much better. We’ve done a ton of research on resorts in both DR and Punta Cana so really either way you can’t go wrong, good luck!

Mexico is so much nicer than punta Cana. I have been to both many times for work. In punta cana it is very unsafe for you to leave the resorts. And the food is much better in Mexico. Try an iberostar in the mr!

Mexico is always the top of my list for a budget vacation that doesn’t feel like a budget vacation (the way DR and Cuba do). the food is so much better in Mexico. when do you plan on going? September / October is the best bang for your buck, in my opinion, you can get some great deals on swanky resorts with amazing weather, less people and no kids!

jesssr:  agreed. I’d much prefer MR if I was going with my FI. If I was going with a big group of friends with a view to be wasted for 7 days straight, then Cuba or Punta Cana/DR.

I’ve never seen MR on sale for $1000 or less though, so price may play a factor in quality of food the OP has at her resort.

AquamarineQueen:  Travel agents should never charge you to book the trip. In fact, every time I’ve booked with FlightCentre they’ve matched any prices I’ve found online (I also fly from Toronto).

I’ve been to Mayan Riviera twice, and would absolutely go again. You feel totally safe as long as you stay on the resort/go with official excursions through the resort, the beaches are GORGEOUS, and the hotels are really really nice. If you can, check out Excellence Riviera Cancun — best hotel I’ve stayed at (tripadvisor reviews will back that up).
