I wonder how many states will pass gay marriage before it becomes legal at the federal level. It’s going to be embarrassing when 40 or so states technically allow gay marriage, but it still means very little because DOMA is still in effect. (I imagine there will be a handful of states that won’t pass it until they’re forced to.)

It is technically legal, but not set to take effect until Jan. 1, 2013. In the meantime the people of the state have the option to send any bill to referendum (popular vote amongst the electorate) and this is headed that way. The wording for the petitions was approved this week, so IT WILL mostly likely be on the ballot this November before it can take effect. We aren’t sure which way it will go, but no state has yet been successful when allowing the majority to vote on this minority right. If it goes the way of California my Fiance and I are going out of our way to pull all of our wedding related money out of this state (sales tax, hotels, vendors).

@moonadea:  There’s a snowballs chance in hell we’ll see recognition at the federal level like in Canada. It’s firmly a state’s rights issue, so while DOMA might be overturned and federal recognition will be granted they will never make a federal mandate in all 50 states. It’s one of the reasons that a constitutional amendment defining marriage never came to fruition.

@Mrs.Darling:  I disagree. It may take twenty or hell, even fifty years but I definitely think gay marriage will someday go the way of interracial marriage.
