Baby boy is 8 days old today. I’d been trying to find time to write up my birth story. It’s long. I always enjoyed the detailed stories so I’m going to try to include everything here.
I started having BH contractions starting around 30 weeks. At my 37 week appointment, my doctor said I was 2cm and 60% and baby’s head was low. He estimated that I’d go into labor in 1-2 weeks. So I got excited. Then one week rolls around and nothing… then two weeks; still nothing. At my 39 week appointment I was 3cm and 80% with his head “very, very low.” This appointment was on a Friday at 39+1 and he told me that he’d see me that weekend. I called my mom to let her know since she lives 6 hours away. She dropped everything and drove over that night.
So we sat around waiting all weekend, Saturday, Sunday, and then Monday. I was getting so impatient. My mom only had a week to take off work. Tuesday morning I lost my mucus plug. I started thinking that might be the start of something. But then nothing happened. Wednesday was also uneventful. Thursday morning the 14th of July (my due date) I woke up to a contraction at ~5:15AM. I’d had several contractions over the last two weeks so I didn’t think much of it at first. Towards the end of the contraction there was a gush of warm fluid. I knew I hadn’t peed myself. I ran into the bathroom to try to keep it from getting it everywhere. I woke up my husband and we fed the dogs and threw the rest of the hospital bag together and went to the hospital.
When they checked me in, I was 3 cm and 100%. I went into labor on my own. My contractions were ~6 or7 minutes apart when they hooked me up on the monitor. This was about 6AM. They confirmed that my water broke and transferred me into my room.
I labored in my room until my contractions were 2 minutes apart and really unbearable. I was trying really hard to go med free. They checked me at noon and I was 3-4 cm. I couldn’t believe that I was in so much pain and labored for 6 hours to not have even progressed 1 cm. Right after they checked me, my baby’s heart rate started dropping really low mid contractions. The doctor came in to let me know that if the baby continued to decel they would need to do a C-section. At this point I was really worried about the baby and I was in so much pain. I decided to get the epidural to ease the pain and to have it ready to go in case I needed a C-Section. They put the epidural in at 12:30 and it was great. I could still feel and move my legs and feel the pressure of the contractions without the pain. The baby’s heart rate improved a bit afterwards too, but it was still dropping during contractions.
They checked me at 1PM and I was 10 cm. I went from 4 to 10 in less than an hour. Because the baby’s heart rate was dropping, they wanted me to “labor down.” They wouldn’t let me push. They said the contractions were easier on the baby than if I were pushing. At this point I was really glad I had the epidural. At 1:55, they finally gave the ok to push. I was really worried and wanted to get him out quickly. He was out at 1:59.
They placed him on my chest and did delayed cord clamping. My husband cut the cord. He was crying pretty weakly so they brought him over to the baby warmer to get him breathing a little better. Because I pushed him out so quickly, he still had quite a bit of amniotic fluid in his lungs. After they took care of that, he was pretty much perfect. He passed all his tests with flying colors. They gave him back to me while they were stitching me up. I had a second degree perineum tear and a first degree tear towards the front. I don’t remember what it was called. It was pretty uncomfortable getting stitched up, but having the baby in my arms helped a lot.
Afterwards we had some visitors and I finally got to eat (I was starving). Around 8PM that night, the night shift nurse came in and I told her I needed to use the rest room but that I’d soaked through the pad they had under me. I figured it was normal. Apparently not. From 8PM until about 12AM they said I was hemorrhaging. They kept coming in and giving me uterus “massages” and weighing my clots that came out. It hurt really bad. I never felt sick though. They kept bags of blood on standby and started me on pitocin and gave me a shot of something in my butt and gave me some cyotec pills. They said they’d have to bring me to surgery if I didn’t stop bleeding soon. Around 2 they finally had everything under control and I didn’t have to go in for surgery. The next day they told me I’d lost over 1.5L of blood. Which apparently is a lot.
The next day we were both cleared to leave the hospital. I’ve been having some supply issues so we’re currently supplementing while I pump and feed what feels like constantly. But other than that, it’s been awesome. He is the happiest, healthiest little baby and we couldn’t be happier.
