Any of you going to be female doctors? I am getting ready to graduate optometry school and going to get married after graduation. How is the best way to deal with the name change. My diploma is in my maiden name and then I want my husbands name… Some people hypenate but I hear that is a hassle with insurance.

Hey! I am getting my PhD in physiology and I have been thinking the same thing. My plan is to legally change my name but for publication purposes I am going to hyphenate since I already have pubs in my maiden name, I want them to be connected to the pubs I will have after I get married.

I intend to be Dr. “Maiden Name” but Mrs. “Married Name” and legally change to Married name. I would love to just go by Dr. “First Name”, but it’s a bit of a mouthful. If you have a short name you can definitely get away with that.

I published papers as a grad student and one coming out as a postdoc, but I’m not staying in academia so I don’t really care about keeping my last name. and my FH says I don’t have to, but I can SO tell he wants to take his name. So, I’m changing mine to middle name=my current last name, last name=his last name. My former boss uses her husband’s name as a legal name (her bank account etc) and her maiden name as her professonal name.
