Well I spent my morning and afternoon reading eveything that I could about taking kitties home and what kind would be best for our situation, although most of it was a repeat of what you ladies told me 🙂
I thought that it would be best to leave it go until Darling Husband came home and we talked about the situation again, until he started texting me information about adopting cats. I asked him for clairficiation, was he telling me that I had his permission to go and adopt a cat for us to keep and love until their time comes?? Yes yes he was. I was on it.
I picked up the things that you ladies suggested at Walmart until we can figure out what she likes and upgrade from there.
I went to a local no-kill shelter close to my house. Unfortunatly the people there were not very welcoming. I was brought into the cat room and I tried to bond with the orange cat there, but she was not really what I was looking for. She just rolled over and ignored me. She let me pet her a little bit, then bit me, then started chewing on everything in site. I feel bad beacuase I know she needed a good home, but she just was not for me.
I drove across the city to the Humaine Society, and thought that I would look around there. I didn’t want a cat just to have a cat, I wanted a companion. I was treated mildy better, but still felt rather unwelcome (It makes me wonder how many people come in saying they want to adopt and aren’t serious). I went into the cat room and the first kitty there was (Bali) was just funny (also black and orange, this is positive), and seemed really sweet. Afte about 20 minutes of not really understanding a volounteer started helping me out. She told me about the cats and showed me ALL the orange ones, and asked me which ones I might want to visit with. I told her I was really interested in Bali, and a few others. She made me sanitize my hands and put on an apron, took Bali out of her cage and she just snuggled right in to me and started puuuurrrring away. She rolled on her back and wanted me to hold her like a baby. I didn’t think that there was a point in visiting with other cats, she was for me. I fell in love and didn’t want to make it harder than it needed to be (I already broke down crying walking past the dogs).
I took her paper to the front desk and the lady pulled up her file. She gave me a sad look at said that Bali has a health condition, she has *insert long name here* meaning she is prone to crystals in her urine, swelling of the bladder wall, for unknown reasons. She needs to be on a soft food diet for life. B….F….D! I have crap kidneys and a crappy UT as well, kitty is coming home with me!
Papers were filled, condition was explined more throughly (although I’m going to talk to my vet about it and see what she has to say. I know my parent’s dog has the same thing, or so it sounds like, and she is on special dry food). They put her in a carboard box (it broke my heart) and she cried all the way home :(.
I quickly set up the litter box and water dish while she was in her box, opened it slowly (all while talking to her) and left the room so that she could explore and just let her come to me. She ran around for a few minutes, pounced on me and just wanted to snuggle for the rest of the night.
When husband came home she freaked out a little bit, sat on my head growling at him. He was good and let her come to him, and now they are in love. They played a little bit, but we didn’t want to scare her, or make her unconortable so we mainly petted her and let her snuggle us.
We do not want her sleeping with us so we did sleep with the door closed and know that we will have to endure her crying for a few nights. She was pretty good all things considered. She did cry a bit, but also seemed to settle. AND I woke up to a DEAD mouse beside DH’s shoes (horray!!!! Darling Husband did tell her to get on it or he was taking her for a gangster ride, clearly he was kidding, but such a good little kitty) Darling Husband was really thrilled about this!
I’ve renamed her Ophelia, for now. I can’t seem to find something that fits. Darling Husband calls her Moxie, and want to name her Mouser. I’m pretty sure she is an Ophelia.
