I co-own a small business and want to get short-term disability to ease the burden of when I take maternity leave since not only will it be unpaid, but I still have to pay my share of the expenses. I have heard that aflac is good, but STD can only be gotten through your employer. I have a meeting tomorrow with the insurance sales guy to hopefully make it available for all my employees (and me too). What questions would you ask? Any advice on aflac vs. other companies? Thanks!

In my experince I was unable to get short term disability because I was already preggo when I tried to apply, and that is a “pre-existing condition.” I would still try to get it because your insurance may be different.

@guitargirl: check to see if conception date effects your coverage. When I found out I was KU, many of the STD companies won’t cover you for pregnancy related issues if you weren’t covered for a full 12 months BEFORE you conceived. THought that was interesting.
