I am meeting with a DJ tonight and not sure what kinds of questions to ask? I mean, of course we are looking for great music, decent cost, and a photo booth as well. Any suggestions on what to look for/ask?

I think a good DJ will know exactly what to tell you without you needing to ask. We met with two guys. They really didn’t “sell” themselves at all. Just gave us a brochure with their prices and told us all the “things” they could sell us like uplighting and sound system upgrades but told us nothing about their DJ’ing “personality” or how they handle certain situations, and they asked us nothing about ourselves or our music tastes.
We met with our third DJ and immediately wanted him. He asked us a ton of questions, including “What is one thing you’ve seen at a reception that you hated?” and then the opposite of something we loved. He chatted with us about how he handles the “drunks” or the “microphone/toasting hogs” and asked us how we feel about tons of different ideas he has for toasting and dances and games and stuff. He wrote down a ton of notes and we hadn’t even booked him yet. He also explained to us that he even brings an emergency kit that includes a toss bouquet an extra garter, safety pins and the works. He said he takes his own personal video and gives that to the bride and groom. He just was sooo easy to work with and talk to that it was an immediate YES from both of us.

One thing you should definitely decide is if you want a DJ to be behind the scenes or more involved and find out what they’re like. Do you want someone to actually move the night along by introducing you, introducing the dinner, announcing things, being in control of the mic for people who want to give speeches, acting as a HOST? etc….or do you just want someone to play music?

Well hopefully if you find the right DJ they will give you all the answers you need without you having to ask! I booked my entertainment based off of seeing them at a friend’s wedding. When I called to talk, he came out with a lot of info about who they were as a company, what they offered, and made sure to tell me they were fully insured! Etc. etc. But as some PP mentioned, find out how involved he/they will be? Will he be super corny or more laid back, etc. And also if they are insured!
We’re having a DJ/live music combo – I can’t wait!
