Hi. Wherever you found him/her, were there some examples of different types of ceremonies they perform? Shorter vs longer, serious vs more light-hearted, etc, and did that appeal to you? That’s what I’d want to know first. I’d ask for ‘samples.’

If you already have that kind of info, I think what they ask YOU is more important. I was at a loss in meeting our officiant, too. She had her work cut out for her because hubby and I started dating at a bad time in my life. She asked us a bunch of questions just to get to know us better as a couple, and to learn about our story. I was nervous, but we ended up having a nice hour-long chit-chat and I wish we could have stayed with her to chat longer.

In the end, she did an excellent ceremony.

A good officiant will be honest with you if they don’t feel that s/he’s a good fit with you.

A good officiant will be prepared to help you through the process. Ours just gave us a ton of options that we could pick from. Do you want your own vows or the standard ones, will you do any unity ceremonies (candle/sand etc), do you have any readings in mind, ours actually had a booklet with readings by theme (romantic/casual/humorous etc) that we picked a couple from. At the end she had an idea of what we wanted and everything worked really well for us.
