I just went to see a new doc and was happy that she agreed with my suspicion that I have PCOS – long annovulatory cycles, weight gain (my spare tire is insane since off BCP). My oriignal ob gave me an ultrasound but the results ruled it out. I was suspicious because I know this all has to do with who is reading the results. Anyway, new doc conducted hormone blood test, but gave me an RX for Metformin (500 mg). She told me I can start right away or wait until the results come in an about a week. I think I am just going to fill it out tomorrow and start taking it. Like you other TTC ladies, I am super impatient. She said to try the Met for 2 months, then we can add Clomid. As I left she said “see you in two months when you are pregnant!” I thought that was sweet, but I am realistic…
Question: How has Metformin affected your cycles? Have they become more regulated? I am aware of the other side effects, and I won’t be heartbroken if I lose a couple of LBS on it 🙂

hi! i just started metformin at the end of janurary… i wasnt having any cycles for the last 11 months and with my first month of metformin still nothing… so then my dr added provera which made me have a cycle. this month, nothing again. im going back on friday because she wants to add provera again, do another ultrasound and talk about chlomid.
so far i havent gained or lost any weight using it, but it hasnt been long since i started either. without the provera though, it hasnt had any effect on my periods. one effect the metformin is making me have – im SUPER tired. im to take 3 a day now, and i have to take them all at night or ill never make it thru the day.

@wifegoodman: Thanks for replying. Good to know about the tired issue. I’ve also heard about the unfortunate bathroom side effects. Sweet. Keep me posted on your situation!

I started metformin late last June, and was pregnant using that alone by the end of August. That was my first normal cycle!

I have been on increasing doses of Metformin for the last year and don’t really have any side effects. I did have some of the infamous “bathroom issues” when I first started taking it, but my body seemed to get used to it and now I don’t have a problem at all as long as I take my pill with a full meal. I started on 500mgs twice a day and am now up to 1000 mgs twice a day. Weight loss is still like pulling teeth and my cycles haven’t improved at all.

Apart from a queasy tummy for the first few months, I had no real side effects. I take 2000mg daily now.
Unfortunately it didn’t help me with either the weight loss, PCOS symptoms – but it got my cycles from 120+ days down to around 60 or so. I needed drugs to get it more regular, and I’ve never naturally ovulated.

I take 1500mg per day. I started the Metformin in September and have lost 18lbs. My cycles have definitely regulated, and I am ovulating again…not pregnant yet though. I also had some tummy troubles when I first started, but after a couple of months, those went away, and now I’m fine! Good luck!!

I started in taking it in January of this year. I have lost a bit of weight (13 lbs.) but I think most of that is becasue I continuesly have a quezy stomach and “bathroom issues” My cycles have regulated (some) and I am ovulating- based on my chart- but am not pregnant yet. Heading back to my RE next week to see what my next step is and looking forward to finding that out! Good Luck!!!

I have been taking it and it has helped. I started a few years ago and had the bathroom issues. I went back on it in January and it has helped me lose weight and regulate my cycles. I am fairly certain that I have been ovulating on it – haven’t checked officially because we aren’t quite ready to start TTC but the signs seem to be there. Have lost 10kg since October and cycles have switched back on since then. I didn’t bleed for about 7 months after getting my implanon out. Touch wood that I can lose another 6-10kg before our wedding so I can be under 100kg and start TTC in July!
