We were considering Mens Wearhouse because it seems easy and convenient. My fiance is 5′ 6″ with a huge muscular chest, arms and thighs, but tiny waist. He can easily look like his wearing a garbage bag when trying on suit jackets. He is worried that a rental tux will not fit him properly. He has a nice, tailored black suit already. So the other option is just to wear his suit and try and dress it up with a nice vest…? Any thoughts or advise, Bees?

My husband is exactly the same way. Huge shoulders, chest, arms, thighs, tiny waist!
We went to a local tux shop and they were able to have the tux fit him well. I’m not sure how a big-box store like MWH will handle that.
My suggestion would be to find a local tux shop that can measure him and do some on-site tailoring to the rental (if you want to do a rental) as they will have more attention to detail. Most tux shops will allow the groomsment from out of town send in measurements for their rental order.
Best of luck! We still need to get a well-fitted suit for my husband but he just keeps growing! (not complaining!)

i also vote for looking for a local tux shop, i felt that the prices were similar but the local shop we went to had many more choices and were friendlier.
my brother has a disability and uses a wheelchair, he is one of my bride’s attendants so he will be wearing a tux.
he’s 5’1″ and his shoulders are broad and his arms are long and proportionate but his legs are very short. we got him measured for a tux. though he won’t be officially fitted until a few days before the wedding, i know the tux place will make him look fantastic.
go to a tux place and have your Fiance try on a tux and see what they say about fit.

He’ll probably need an athletic cut because of his shoulder/waist ratio. My Fiance has board shoulders and an athletic frame. You might want to call them and see if they have any of those, or see if you have a Jim’s Formal Wear retailer around you.

@whitefuzzy: A rental will not fit him. End of story.

Probably not. Rental tuxedos are made to fit everyone, and that means they don’t fit anyone very well. The rental company will shorten or lenghten the sleeves, but they will not taper a jacket for a muscular man.
My size is halfway between your groom’s and the average. In a rental tux, I either look like:
A) a miniature man-boy, or
B) like I gained 30 pounds.
Either way, it’s not a good look for such an important day! No man should look like a schlub next to his beautiful bride.

@Professor6pack: Agreed. Scour the vintage shops, and get it altered properly! Won’t cost much more.

Vintage stores, thrift stores (yes you WILL see Tuxes there), theblacktux.com, and eBay are your friends. Or, I’ve heard good things about The Black Lapel’s MtM. Both theblacktux.com, and the Black Lapel, are both expertly reviewed, in the last four weeks at:
