No great suggestions here. You are talking to a person who has lived with her Darling Husband for 2 years now, and we still have 2 sets of dishes, glasses, pots, pans, tupperware and towels and depending on who’s making dinner that night decides which set we use. Luckily we have room for everything right now, but once our family starts expanding, we’ll definitely have to pair down.

One thing we did for a lot of the things we thought we “needed” to keep but didn’t know where to put them was to put them in the basement. We made an agreement that 1 year after our move-in date, anything that was still down there would be donated to charity. I’d say around 90% of the stuff was still in the basement, untouched 1 year later and it’s now at the Salvation Army.

1. Ikea helped us a lot, too.

2. Freecycle – it is a yahoo website for the area you live in that allows you to post what you want rid of for free. People respond and they have to be able to come get it and haul it away. Great for getting rid of furniture that you dont’ want to throw out.

3.Boxes with labels! Big rubbermaid boxes hold a lot and you can put a label on the front (like: DH’s Baseball collection, Photos, Holiday decorations) and store them in a closet or basement.

4. Get a good storage system for filing paperwork. You will get a crap load of mail and will need a good system to file it and shread what you don’t need or else you will drown in papers.

PM me for more ideas! Fiance and I moved into his mother’s house after she passed away. Not only did we have to clean out all of her things, but we had all of our stuff, so it was essentually 3 households merged into one! It was a very long process but we are now totally organized!

Great thread! I would love some organization tips too! I have just moved a lot of my stuff over @ DH’s place. He didn’t have a whole lot to begin with but now I feel like we have a little ‘too’ much and could rid ourselves of some of it.

As Darling Husband likes to say “we kept my stuff and got rid of his”, or as I like to say “we kept the items in the best condition, and that was usually my stuff.”

Although we still have 2 separate filing systems, but since I just put things in the folder and forget about it, that doesn’t really bother me. And when we got married, we registered for nice things to replace both of our other items. Goodwill really benefited from our wedding.
