My seamstress says the flare of my mermaid dress should start just above my knees, but this looks a bit low to me. Should I ask her to start the flare a few inches higher?? (It can’t go that much higher due to the shape of the existing dress.. a few sizes too big for me.)
Background: I bought this dress at Filene’s Basement Running of the Brides, knowing it’d be a bit of an experiment to change the size so drastically… crossing my fingers about it!
Pics are from my most recent fitting, with only basting done.

i think its sitting quite nice now.. But I see what you mean. Will it affect your movement to walk if it sits a little higher depending on how many inches?
I like your dress tho!

The first photo looks AMAZING; the last one though, your reflection seems to show the flare starting a lot lower. I’m confused, haha!
I love where it starts (seems to be just above your knee) in the top photo; you look like a magazine model (and you look really tall)!
Are you having some sort of crinoline sewn in for body at the bottom? I think when it’s flared out it looks great, but when it flattens down (like in the mirror maybe?) it loses something.

I also think that the first and last picture look like the flare is starting at different places. In the last picture, it looks like it’s starting too low. I actually think the first pic looks pretty good, maybe just an inch or two higher for the flare if you really wanted. It’s your dress so you should do whatever you think will look best. But I generally agree with your seamstress that the flare should start a bit above your knees.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the last picture (where I’m standing straight) makes the dress look very different (and less “wow”) than the first picture, where I’m posing with my hips off to one side, and one knee slightly forward. I will ask the seamstress about adding crinoline or adjusting the side seams that stand out in the last picture.

Oh that is beautiful the way it looks! I wouldn’t change a thing!
