I’m 5′.  However, I don’t think my gown was a mermaid (I think it was an a-line…not sure what kind it was.  I just fell in love with the dress when I tried it on) but I did find this article that may help  1) http://weddings.weddingchannel.com/wedding-planning-ideas/wedding-fashion/articles/gowns-for-petite-brides.aspx?MsdV

2) http://petite.about.com/od/SpecialOccasionDressing/a/Bridal-Gown-Guide.htmisit=1,

Good luck!

i wore a mermaid and a drop waist for my wedding.  i’m 5’2″ and wore only 3″ heels.  i’m short but i’m not skinny.  my measurements are 35 bust, 27 waist, and 34 hips so not exactly what you would call an hourglass but because i’m broader up top, i couldn’t wear a-line or empire dresses.  you say you’re skinny but with curves.  can you post a picture of yourself?

can’t find a full body pic of my second dress but it is a drop waist:

I am your same statue- 5’1, skinny. I found that mermaids made me look straight up and down, vertically. It didn’t do anything for me..I went with a close style-fit and flare- nd it flattered me soo much more.

I am a bit taller than you but I will be wearing flats (putting us in the same boat!). I found that adding a sash at the natural waist of the dress could visually help with the proportions when trying a dropped waist or mermaid dress.

@vyan:  I think you’ll look absolutely great in a mermaid fit. With heels you won’t look small and you’ve got a great figure to pull it off.

I absolutely love the first dress!

I’m only 5′ and had to alter my dress quite a bit at the bottom. Wore 3 inch heels. I’m short, very curvy but not skinny Tongue Out. Here’s my dress with heels on.

@vyan:  You would look great in a mermaid dress. I suggest getting it altered earlier than most just incase.

I’m built very similar to you, petite, 5’2, skinny but curvy-ish body and tried on both a dropped waist ballgown and a mermaid dress. For me I found that the mermaid dress actually accented the petiteness where as it felt like the ballgown swallowed me up. I also think it has something to do with the sample sizes. The mermaid dress was a size 8 where as the ballgown was a size 14 or 16, so I really couldn’t get a great idea of how it would look.

This is Allure 8901. I’m standing on a pedestal but even with that the dress was far too long and the proportions of the size 14-16 dress didn’t fit my body very well.

(Sorry the pic is so big!) This is Sloan by Sottero and Midgley. I had originally said NO ruffles, but once the dress was on I LOVED it.

With a properly sized dress I honesly think a mermaid or dropped waist ballgown would look great on you, it will really just come down to your preference. Hope this helped!  🙂
