I went to Riu Palace Mexico in 2006.  I thought it was amazing and I didn’t have any stomach issues.  I was careful to only drink bottled water though and even brush my teeth with bottled water.  I did have ice in some drinks though and didn’t have any issues.  They really have worked on this issue and unless you have a super sensitive stomach you should be alright.

If you want to splurge a bit I suggest the Royal Hideaway.  It was just a vacation for us so I couldn’t justify it.

haha- i didn’t worry one bit about the water. And the shower was huge and lots of hot water.

Yes the bed linens were my one and only complaint about the hotel.  They were scratchy.  BUT, with that being said- the beaches were Gorgeous.  Soft sand. No rocks!  there’s rocks in the ocean- but its the ocean!
If you send me your email address I can send you pics we took in april.

We got married 9/6/08 and went to Cozumel, Mexico from 9/6 to 9/12. We booked the Sabor Wyndham but got upgraded to the new Aura, which is what I had hoped would happen. The hotel was absolutely beautiful, we had a swim up suite which we loved! It was all-inclusive and had no problems with getting food or drinks whenever we needed. We didn’t have any problems with the water either, we mostly drank bottled water but the restaurants do serve water in glasses. The 24 hour room service was great, we ordered something every night. It was off season so not all the restaurants were open but it wasn’t crowded either. The only downside was that we felt the effects of the incoming hurricane that was heading towards Texas and alot of the water sports and activities were cancelled. My husband was hesitant about even going to Mexico but he is sl glad we did. He enjoyed it as much as I did. We definitely want to go back sometime with friends. The hotel was a little over $1000 and we used my dad’s airline miles for our flight so that helped out alot. We spent a little over $400 just for tipping, taxis and souveniers.

We were just there in November – we stayed at an all-inclusive called Secrets Capri.  It’s an adults-only resort and was absolutley beautiful!  It was recommended to us by our travel agent; she said she had been there twice and that her boyfriend always asks to go back.  The food was great, the beach was beautiful, the actual resort was breathtaking – there was always a ton to do, it’s close to the ferry to Cozumel, and the service was top-notch.  I would recommend it to anyone.

Oh, I didn’t answer the second part of your question – did we get sick?  No, and I took showers with my mouth open, brushed my teeth with the tap water, and drank the water the restaurants provided on the tables.  They said that the resort has it’s own filtration system, so I didn’t worry too much.  In hindsight, that may have been a little cavalier of me, but in the end, everything was fine and we had the time of our lives.

We stayed at the Aventura Spa Palace in the Riveria Maya for our October Honeymoon.  I can not recommend it enough.  It was WONDERFUL.  Anyone going on a honeymoon should consider staying here.  The staff and service were OUT OF THIS WORLD!

We also went to Excellence Playa Mujeres!  The bed WAS hard but not so hard that it was intolerable. I don’t remember the beach being rocky at all!  There is a problem with seagrass but they are really vigilant about it, and we didn’t find it to be a "problem" at all because they cleaned it so frequently.  We feel like it was an AMAZING deal for the price we paid and we had a wonderful experience!  I blogged about it a couple times… in this post you can see Mr. Peng in the water.  Notice how the beach looked "combed"… they comb it several times a day to get rid of the seagrass… so it’s not a problem.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Pinguinos ir a Mexico!

I have nothing but praise for our experience!  Even with a few days of rain we had an absolute blast!

Loved your photos, Mrs. Penguin!  Excellence is a really a fantastic deal.  We booked through hotels.com and it turns out to be great.  I’m not typically drawn to all-inclusives but this one was great and I’ve never been so relaxed on vacation- had no decisions to make except where to eat and where we wanted to lay out- the pool or the beach.  We went to Playa del Carmen one night with a couple that we had met.  Highly recommended!

My parents have timeshare at http://www.mayanpalace.com , which is where we’re going (only 41 days until we leave!). It’s a breathtaking resort!

It’s not all-inclusive, but it’s very reasonable. You’d probably break even between what you pay at an all-inclusive and here.

I thought we were dead-set on the Dominican Republic, but we met with a travel agent a few days ago and, based upon how we answered all of her questions, she thought a few resorts on the Riviera Maya would be a good fit for us.  One was Secrets Capri (mentioned earlier here), and the other was Secrets Maroma Beach.  Even though it’s more expensive, I’m leaning toward SMB because Maroma Beach has been voted "Best Beach" by Travel Channel for a few years and by Conde Nast.  Because the folks at TC and CN likely know every beach in the world, I’m willing to trust their judgement!

We are stayng at Secrets Maroma Beach! It is far from all the cities, but that is what we liked about it. We are not going there so we can shop, we are going to relax and relax we will!
