looks like we are Mexico bound in July for our late honeymoon! I’ve been dying to go to Mexico and sooo excited. We are on the east coast so would prefer to limit our resort search to riviera maya/playa de Carmen area. We really live just baking in the sun, drinking strong margaritas and eating really delish good. Very laid back travelers and not really into exploring. Would love feedback on resorts you have been to that would fit the bill. Oh, and trying to be price sensitive since we blew a lot on our Destination Wedding wedding ( at a pretty crappy resort none the less!!)

I saw such good things about Excellence Playa Mujeres on here and on TripAdvisor that we cancelled our cruise honeymoon to go there instead!

We are going to the riu palace for our honeymoon! It came very highly recommended!

We’re going to Excellence Playa Mujeres. All of the Excellence hotels are amazing though.

Excellence Playa Mujeres was amazing! We had a great time. We got one of the rooms with a private pool in the excellence club and I really recommend it.

We stayed at Valentin Imperial Maya in Riviera Maya. We absolutely loved it there. It’s an 18+ resort and was beautiful. They have about 8 different restaurants with food from different parts of the world. Very relaxing with beautiful pools and beach! Rooms and staff were very nice as well. We know 3 other couples who stayed there as well and all loved it. Some even went back. Good luck!
I think we paid about $3,500 for 8 days.

I’ve been to Mexico a few times with my fiancé and we love it! We usually stay in the Riviera Maya area as there’s lots to do and see, but if your not keen explorers I would maybe widen your search area, you’ll find some breath-taking hotels just north of Cancun.
We are just about to book our honeymoon at the Excellence Playa Mujeres (seems to be popular on this thread 😉 ) as it had brilliant reviews and it looks so luxurious! I would suggest looking at this hotel if you’re after a laid back honeymoon.

So looks like I’m gonna check out excellence playa mujeres. Then I’m gonna learn how to pronounce it! Thanks!!

We seriously did the exact same thing.
We’re going to Excellence as well — at “Play-ah Moo-hare-es” we’re spending a week there and then a week at Le Blanc in the Hotel Zone of Cancun. So pumped for both. I think both weeks come out to around $4k each but you could go more or less expensive at either resort because we got like the 2nd or 3rd most expensive room in each location.

We went to Excellence Riviera Cancun last year and it was great. If you want to know more send me a PM and I’ll send you a link with more details and photos from our trip. Good luck deciding!

Not to jump on the bandwagon…but we just booked Excellence Playa Mujeres for our honeymoon in October. I’ve heard great things about it!
Any bees have tips, suggestions on excursions, or reviews of the rooftop terrace suite?
We’re also planning on doing the turtle release on Isla Mujeres. Can’t wait!

I’m going to Finest Playa Mujeres.. Owned by excellence its a brand new resort that opened a couple months ago and it’s a tad less expensive than excellence itself. Still the same beautiful swim out rooms and 9 restaurants!
Sidenote: Following for excursion info.. we’re going in 2 weeks!

We’re currently looking into Riviera Maya resorts as well. Originally, it was between that and Cabo but apparently you can’t really get into the water on the beach in Cabo because the current is so strong there.
So it looks like we’re going with Riviera Maya! That will be great because we’ll be able to check out the Mayan ruins as well. I looked at Excellence Playa Mujeres because of the great reviews on this thread, but saw that it’s further north in Cancun. How far is it from some of the different Mayan sites?
Right now, we’re leaning towards Valentin Imperial Maya mentioned in this thread. It looks great, is affordable, and seems more in the location we want to be in.. though we’re not going to actually book for a while, so there’s plenty of time to decide.
Any other good suggestions for resorts that are closer to Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen rather than Cancun?

I’ve been to Excellence Playa Mujeres and Excellence Riviera Cancun!
Both are AMAZING — the food is seriously delicious, and one of the biggest selling points. They do top tier liqur (just request it when they make the drinks — we drank Don Julio margaritas at both, you just ask for that). The beaches are gorgeous and they seriously have excellent service and take care of all of the details.
In terms of which is better, Fiance and I preferred Excellence Riviera Cancun but my coworker who has also been to both preferred Excellence Playa Mujeres. They are both amazing — the differences are small. The room at Excellence Playa Mujeres has a nice jacuzzi tub that’s next to the patio and a daybed, but less bathroom privacy. Playa Mujeres also has the tapas restaurant which we loved (but the other restaurants are largely all the same, and amazing).
For beach, we preferred Excellence Riviera Cancun, but that could be because of when we went instead of the hotel itself (we did Riviera Cancun in September and Playa Mujeres in December).
If anyone has questions about either I’m happy to help 🙂
