I think it depends where you go. Check the State Department website. They recommend against traveling to some parts of Mexico. I personally am worried about going there because I don’t want to be kidnapped, but I know some people who have gone there recently and had fun.

We went to Playa del Carmen in November and had a blast!  We had no issues, we did stay at a resort but traveled into town a few times and twice even past dark.  We also did a number of excursions and had a great time.

I have a friend who is there for the upcoming semester, he left right after Christmas. I’m not saying it is something I would do at the moment but he was pretty optimistic about his decision.

You just need to avoid the border cities!  Other than that, its perfectly safe.  Fly in to Cancun and then its about a 30 minute bus or taxi ride to Playa Del Carmen or the Mayan Riveria – its nothing but hotels and resorts. Its safe, gorgeous, and affordable – one of the best vacations I’ve ever taken.   For a honeymoon, I’d suggest Tulum.

We got engaged in Cabo last March and our families were FREAKING OUT even then about us going because of all the warnings. But honestly, it’s really the border towns you need to worry about. If you’re going to be in a very tourist heavy place, like Cabo, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, etc, I wouldn’t spend too much time worrying. Just be aware of your surroundings and don’t go too far off the beaten track.

Were going to the Mayan Riviera in 2 weeks so i’ll let you know!! As far as i’m aware the only issue is border towns, and during the election which is in July.  Staying on the resorts should be fine.

It wasn’t a Honeymoon, but a spurge holiday – much more fancy that our normal holidays. We stayed in an all inclusive Secrets hotel near Cancun, and it was absolutely amazing!! To be fair we stayed in the complex most of the time, but when we did take day trips to the Mayan ruins, or underground pools, we never felt “unsafe”. It was honestly the best holiday. I say go for it!

I went to Playa del Carmen with a friend 2 years ago, and we felt completely safe.  We went out on the town and partied almost every night, and stayed out very late, and never felt unsafe.  I’d highly recommend the Playa area – it is gorgeous and has great nightlife – more grown up than Cancun, but still young (a lot of the people we saw were in their mid to late 20s, and we also met a lot more Europeans).

The resorts are all very private and safe, and I think the fact that even wandering around the streets drunk late at night was fine speaks highly for Playa hehe

Personally, I wouldn’t. There have been far too many serious incidents in Mexico-including at or near resorts-for me to ever step foot there. I feel like its tempting fate. And if you ever do need help for some reason (IMO) you can’t count on the police because many of them are corrupt.

@kelmac: I know that Mexico city is really dangerous, and would never recommend going there. But are the resort / tourist / beach areas really that bad? I mean Cancun is such a popular holiday destination. I think as long as you have your head screwed on you’ll be fine. So only go on trips through reputable companies, don’t wonder round late at night on your own drunk etc etc.

The resort areas are as safe as any city, you just have to use common sense. There aren’t many–if any–reports of violence to tourists around the cancun/playa mecca. Just stay away from Mexico City and Juarez. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And if you’re going to an all inclusive and plan to only leave on excursions, you’re probably safer there than in NYC.

I’m heading to playa for our honeymoon–can’t wait!
