I LOVE Mexico. The culture, the music, the food, the weather, the beaches, the people. It is hands down, my favourite place to travel. Hotels are luxurious (uhm, Four Seasons Punta Mita; I need not say more) and the country is rich with history.
Usually if you hear about something happening, it’s to people who started trouble or who are looking for trouble. If I was an academic travelling there to do research on the cartels, yeah I would be frightened, and for good reason. But as a cute little tourist with no connection to or interest in any organized crime or drug trade? I’m just as safe as being on the streets of Detroit.
I’ve been to places in Central and South America far more dangerous than Mexico – those are places you want to stay away from…El Salvador, for example.
Viva Mexico! Have an awesome honeymoon, wherever you book it!

I was scared to go at first too, but Fiance and his family have gone in the past – I now LOVE Mexico. We go to Mayan Riviera. Just stay on the resort, and you will be fine 🙂

Well, FI’s on board now! Thanks again for the links and especially firsthand experiences! Those are really helping put our minds at ease. We’re not big drinkers, and will probably stay on the resort grounds most of the time… And I do speak Spanish [mostly] fluently, so I could at least bargain for our lives if worst came to worst… 😉

My Fiance had concerns as well, and still might, but we’re going to Playa Mujeres for our honeymoon! We’ve been around the caribbean including Mexico (I have, not FI) and felt a lot safer in Mexico than Jamaica and Dominican Republic. I feel a MILLION times safer in Cancun area than in East St. Louis & St. Louis (15 miles from me) or other large cities in America.

@CarolF: I’m going to Secret’s Maroma Beach too!
My mom is a travel agent and has been on many tours of hotels in Mexico and that area and it is pretty safe. If you are used to being in big cities in the US, you should probably take the same type of precautions, but overall, she thinks it’s wonderful (my family including myself are all born and raised in NYC).
My sister and several friends have been there and had nothing but great experiences.
I am so psyched to go! 1 month from today!!!

There are always travel advisories out for Mexico. I’ve read them too, and they do sound scary. I’ve been to Mexico twice (Cancun area) and never had any type of issue whatsoever. If you stay in the resort and take normal precautions (put valuables and passports in safe, etc.), you’ll be fine.
I’ve felt safer in Mexico than I have in my own city.
If you go to the border towns to make trouble then you’ll find yourself wishing you listened to the travel advisories.

I have been traveling to Mexico for the past 3 years, since the deals are so good and they have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!!! I LOVE the Mayan Riviera and highly recommend it for a honeymoon – I just got engaged there! Cancun is like Miami – lots of tourists and resorts. If you are not into that, I would definitely recommend heading down to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Playa has great shops and restaurants along 5th Avenue, and fun lounges for night partying. If you want something quieter, Tulum is SO magical and romantic!! Feel free to message me if you have any questions, but seriously, Mexico is wonderful and the people very hospitable and service-oriented!
