Travel Nut here… in that Mr TTR & I are semi-retired and we travel a lot.

Here is one suggestion…

Don’t stay downtown… stay out by the airport because it will be cheaper, and more convenient to the Airport (where you’ll have to fly into and out of any how)

Transportation from the Airport to Downtown Miami, South Beach etc is fairly good (and not that expensive)

When we were in Miami for our own Honeymoon “layover” we stayed at the Embassy Suites near the Airport (lol, actually right beside the airport)

Embassy Suites (MIA Airport) = http://embassysuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/florida/embassy-suites-miami-international-airport-MIASPES/index.html

TripAdvisor – Embassy Suites (MIA Airport) = http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Review-g34438-d85192-Reviews-Embassy_Suites_Miami_Airport-Miami_Florida.html

And it wasn’t crazy expensive… and the rooms were clean and nice (and of course with Embassy Suites you get the benefit of the seperate Bedroom which is nice).  Staff were friendly & courteous.  Restaurant & Bar on-site.  Complimentary Hot Cooked to Order Breakfast.  And there is a Pool and other amenities as well.

You can do what we did… take the Complimentary Hotel Shuttle to and from the Airport.  Easy Peasy (5 minutes away).  And for getting downtown, I’d go that route as well… over to the Airport and then the Metrorail Link (runs 5 AM to Midnight).

Even if you have to cab it back to the Hotel after Midnight, prices shouldn’t be too crazy (see the rates for the Airport Cabs for example = http://www.miami-airport.com/hotel_shuttles.asp ).  Just be sure and KNOW what you’ll be paying to the driver for the run up to the Airport Hotel area, BEFORE you get in.

Hope this helps,

PS… And lastly two great HONEYMOON TIPS

1- No matter what Hotel you choose to stay at, find out if they offer a Hotel Loyalty Program… (such as Hilton HHonors Points).  Sign up BEFORE you book (takes 5 minutes on-line to do), cause you’ll often get a preferred rate or a better room, extra perks etc… if you find a price with a 3rd Party Discounter on-line see if the Hotel will match it (they often will).  BEST to always book direct with the Hotel when you can, cause 3rd Party Websites are really only selling you an “SOLD AS IS” product, not the same as buying from the Co. themselves.

2- TELL EVERYONE THIS IS YOUR HONEYMOON EVERYWHERE YOU GO.  Seriously, people LOVE this stuff.  You’ll find you will receive quite a few perks cause of it… Upgraded Rooms – FREE Drinks, Desserts, Souvenirs, etc.  Don’t be shy… you only get to rock this party once afterall.

3- Enjoy !!  Honeymoon memories are the sweetest ones there are for sure.

I’ve only been to Miami once a couple years ago for New Years and split a room at the Epic with a couple friends. I don’t remember it being terribly expensive but it was also split 4 ways and not just two.

Have you thought about trying to rent an apartment or a condo on AirBNB?  You can prob find great deals in full amenity buildings near the beach if the owner is out of town for a weekend.
