Has anyone else had an experience like this, where your miscarriage bleeding went on for weeks and weeks?
I am having a never – ending miscarriage, that’s what it feels like anyway. I’ve been dealing with this for 3 months almost.
After taking the misoprostol pills to induce a miscarriage (blighted ovum at 5.5 weeks confirmed at 8 weeks) – I have been bleeding off and on for 3 weeks. I’ve had it start to slow down and then all of a sudden I will have a resurgence of fresh bright red blood and pass tons of clots. I’ve been to the hospital and been checked out and everything seems ‘fine’ – they told me it could still go on a bit. But now I’m having another resurgence of bleeding and passing clots after another week of seeming to finally slow down. I wasn’t even that far along how is this even possible? I can’t believe there’s ‘that much’ for my body to pass but it keeps happening.
Is this ‘normal’? Like has anyone else has bleeding for weeks after a miscarriage with it slowing down and then starting up agan? I’m getting so fed up. This is exhausting.

Sunshine09: I’m so sorry for your loss. I recently had a loss at 6 weeks. I started spotting around 5.5 and that continuted until I confirmed my hcg was stalled. I was in limbo for a few days, and then I started bleeding the very beginning of October. It was medium flow for a few days and then VERY heavy/cramping and continued on/off (mostly on with a few days of spotting and 3 days of ewcm) until early November. My RE also followed my HCG down. I ovulated when it was around 30 and only stopped bleeding for 3 days before I got my next AF. All said and done I spotted/bled for nearly 45 days. My understanding is that it can be totally normal, unfortunately. Are you being followed by your Dr? Do you know what your betas are?

I would not think that that much bleeding would be normal, especially after a blighted ovum at 8 weeks. I had the same thing and my bleeding lasted about 1 week, it was like a normal period other than the initial MC which was very heavy for a few hours (it happened naturally, not with medication). There could be tissue left behind, have you been back to your OB/GYN? Have you had an ultrasound? I would be pushing for an ultrasound, they may need to do a D&C.

Hi. I’m so sorry for your loss. I also recently went through a miscarriage with misoprostol. I experienced heavy bleeding/cramping for a few hours. It’s been a week and it’s completely slowed – to only slightly spotting, if even. Hopefully this will be it. I am following up with by OB/GYN on Monday and also getting a blood test. You mentioned that you’ve been to the hospital, but maybe make another appointment to discuss? My doctor told me 7-14 days is the norm but of course, evey woman is different.

BeverlyGeese: Yes I am being followed closely by my doctor, my betas have been steadily decreasing, at the highest point they got up to 19000 and at last check a week ago it had dropped to 8000. Another follow up blood test this week. As I say I was checked at the hospital for the bleeding and they sent me home saying everything thing had cleared and my uterus was back to nermal but that the bleeding could go on for a bit. So the doctors aren’t concerned yet, it just seems so strange that it’s such an ordeal for an early empty sac.

Sunshine09: Totally understand. I was barely even 6 weeks and I bled that long (usually have a period of only like 2-3 days TOPS). My understanding, now that I have been through it, is that everyone is different. My body took a very long time to drop the HCG back to negative…and I kept bleeding because of it. I would be concerned if your betas stall or they go back up. You can have your Dr check for retained tissue or new blood flow to the uterus (which would indicate retained tissue).

I had two miscarriages around 5-6 weeks and both resulted in bleeding for at least 2 weeks. Then at least a weekish of spotting. Have you been bleeding for 3 months or dealing with knowing it’s a miscarriage etc for at long? I don’t think it would be unheard of to bleed for several weeks but not months. If your numbers are still high after your next test I’d have a serious decision with your doctor and maybe do another round of miso. Good luck.

I think everytime is different. The first time I had a loss I bled for weeks and it kept starting up again and I was getting clots for weeks. Other losses at the same time period were all different and not as bad. Sorry for your loss and I hope your body is back to normal soon.

lovemygsp: Sorry no, I’ve been bleeding now for 3 weeks, this ‘pregnancy’ has lasted for 3 months with us having known it was not viable for the last 2 months. Of then we’ve had to do multiple follow up scans and tons of repeated blood tests. It just feels like a long time to be focused on something that not even there. My first 2 miscarriages (also early) were so different, I had the loss (with the severe cramping and bleeding) and then I bled for one week like a period and that was it.
Thanks for chiming in, the bleeding does now seem to be slwoing (again…) Boy what a process. I’ve been wearing pads for 3 weeks. I just want it to be over and get back my body back to normal.

I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks and was given mistoporol to avoid a D&C. I bleed for at least 6 weeks, maybe more. At 4 weeks my doctor did an ultrasound and said i had a clot that was slow to pass. A few weeks after that i passed a HUGE clot and the bleed finally stopped. The clot was uterus shaped and well over an inch across and 2 inches tall! Scared me to death. But the doctor at the ER seemed rather unconcerned.

Sunshine09: 🙁 I absolutely hated the pad thing the most too. Hang in there. I’m glad it’s slowing and hope it continues. MCs suck and I know I never expected to bleed as much as I did when I was only week or two out from AF.

I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks and it lasted about a month. It started when I just gushed blood, like blood everywhere. Then that would go to a more normal flow for a few days, then cease for a day or 2, then start over with the gushing blood episode. I had 4 cycles of that before it stopped. This was right after I stopped breastfeeding my current baby, so at the time I thought it was just my body trying to get back to a normal cycle. After a month tho I finally went to the doctor and they confirmed it was a miscarriage. I think that was fortunate for me because I didn’t have the emotion to go along with the experince..it was much easier to deal with in hind sight. Best of luck to you, hang in there!

I never completely stopped bleeding between MC and my first AF (which was almost exactly 28 days later). I was so worried because a week before AF I had bleeding so heavy that it was almost as bad as the MC. But my OB was not worried. Everyone is different. Just keep checking in with your doctor if you have any concerns.

I really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences. Going on week 4 of light to moderate bleeding now.
greenviolets: Oh that’s interesting. I wonder if that’s what going to happen with me too. Good to know. thanks for sharing
