Which ring do you prefer? All of those pricing are pretty average so unless you know the diamond specs there’s not a lot for us to gauge the differences on. A lot of jewlery stores like this charge more for ‘lesser quality’ diamonds so I would definitely ask them for more info if you don’t already have it 🙂

In my experience Michael Hill’s diamonds are expensive for a very low quality. They have their own grading scale which doesn’t align to others

Just FYI. In australia… as far as retail jewellers go michael hill is the best.

Just thought you would want to know…my coworker got her engagement ring from People’s a few years ago. After a couple of months,  she felt a chip in her diamond near the prong. She went back to the store and they told her it was an inclusion. She told them that she could feel the chip with her fingernail! They gave her a hard time about her diamond, insisting it was an inclusion. She thinks they might’ve tried to hide the chip under a prong.

They eventually gave her a new diamond but she was put off by the whole experience.

DH told me when he was shopping for rings, he went to all the mall stores and he did not feel comfortable buying from them. He ended up going back to Spence diamonds and bought my e-ring from them. I have since gone back for a reset and they’ve been great through the whole experience.

Their warranty is also pretty good. You do have to get your ring checked once a year to be covered for loss of your centre stone.

My wedding set is from People’s. dh and I were treated very well. When dh went back to buy the ring the lady remembered him (and the ring) and have him a great deal. I’ve never had a problem with my jewellery (which I have several pieces) or my wedding set.

Fyi: you can buy. Extra insurance from People’s which allows you to forego the six month inspections, I think it is roughly 100 more.

My ring is from Michael Hill. I have had it for 6 years and never had any issue with it, although I did switch out the diamond (a 0.25 ) for a larger moissanite later on. I was told that I had to come in every 6 months though for them to inspect the ring, so I would double check that part.

I’ve been told the quality of the diamonds in michael hill (australia) is poor and ove priced by a a friend who currently works in michael hill (aus) and a friend who did work there and now works at tiffany (aus) – that why when they have sales the prices are so low both these friends have worked there for over 5 years and have said people come in with rigs with stones missing, prongs have snapped off and chipped stone. However they have said other people have had no problems and are regular happy customers. But they have said for themselves they wouldn’t go with MH

What are the specs on them? We looked at People’s but decided to purchase online from James Allen instead, the mall stores are just really overpriced for what are generally lower quality pieces. I’ve heard horror stories about the service at People’s too, but can’t comment on Michael Hill.

My Fiance bought my wedding set from Michael Hill almost 2 years ago, and I’ve never had any problems with my e ring or the people there! We usually try to go back to the original store that we got them from and deal with the same saleslady, she was amazing and so so sweet.  I took my ring in to be redipped and she was almost more excited than I was for our engagement pictures.

kellyjz:  I used to live in Canada, so I have some experience with both People’s and Michael Hill. Of the two, I would go for People’s because at least they are part of a larger chain – Zales  in the USA. I also have found their pricing to be a little better, with better sales and discounts than Michael Hill. I have never been impressed by MH, I don’t know what about it, but they seem “cheaper” and quality lower than People’s.

I would personally take my budget and order from Bluenile much much better quality and you get a better ring for your money. No offense to people with rings from Peoples and Micheal hill but they are a rip off for the quality.

If I had a really low budget I might go to Peoples but would I spend $5500 on a ring from Peoples? absolutly not.

My fiancé bought my ring second hand, Michael hill branded, sadly it was grossly too big. Not knowing any better I took it to Michael hill for help ready to pay for any work needed. They sized it to what I later found was an enormous amount of sizes and stones began to fall. After three returns and 2 months without any engagement ring to show my family and friends I was devastated and out of pocket. I wrote to customer care who were genuinely horrified at what had happened to me.

Michael hill then not only refunded my out of pocket expenses… But they completely rebuilt me a brand new ring using my diamonds in my perfect size. Until that point I would have slammed the customer service at MH but I can not fault how it was handled once I went above a certain store manager.

I am no diamond expert, I have a certificate stating all of the specs and have it insured to its full value of $5,500. My other half chose me this ring not because of brand or price or diamond but rather the unique style it has that I loved. I can’t tell if my diamonds are low quality or not but they are clear, sparkle and I love them because he gave them to me and I can not put a price on that. Since the ring was remade I have had no problems with it.

It is insured privately and with MH warranty and it does require 6 monthly checks here in Aus. Our wedding bands have been privately made by a independent jeweller because I didn’t like MHs matching wedder. Happy ring hunting.
