I thought this happened about 10 years ago? I remember everyone going on and on about the 17-year thing and they were EVERYwhere (I lived in MD at the time). Was that not the 17-year group and everyone was just calling them that incorrectly? Ugh… I hate them. I only know we had an ‘invasion’ 10 years ago because I was with my driving instructor when one flew into the car. That was interesting 🙂

Dear. God. I’m in Baltimore. Do they last all summer? Thankfully I’ll be back in MN for the wedding until the beginning of June!

@Puppy Love:  When there were cicadas in Maryland 10 years ago (I was in Severna Park, so close to Balt.) they lasted ALL summer and it was miserable. It was a summer that no one spent any time outside. They don’t attack people, but there are so many of them that they just randomly hit you when they fly around and they were ALL over the place. Then their empty shells started to pile up and it was just disgusting.

All this right after I buy a house across from a park and adopt a dog that barks all day and eats everything.  Joy.

I am actually excited about this. I absolutely love them and their noise. My fiance knows I’m absolutely Giddy over these critters.

I should note when I had to drop a microbiology major for medical reasons I considered doing entemology. The problem was I am a single mom and the two schools that offered it were about 150 miles away and would not work with a working schedule either :(.

I should also note fiance knows I love bugs. My engagement ring is dragonflies and was presented in a box made from a rhinosaurus beetle. I have a lot of bug jewelery including a cicada necklace.  So I really do love insects. I know strange but I cant help it.

@adoc86:  SO not what I wanted to hear! Haha. This is seriously disturbing, I am so terrified of flying insects. They’re just so unpredictable! Bleh…

we have a few of these guys every year it seems, I didn’t realize they were in 17 year cycles because I hear them every year. I wonder if thats some other kind of bug then? they make noise and my grandma says that when they make noise it means its going to be very very hot. The more noise, the hotter it will be. But she’s a funny old mexican lady that has lots of old wives tales 🙂 but the sound they make is a sound of summer around here. I have never seen them in the numbers that are mentioned here. Im in the city though too so that probably makes a difference.

I’ve never found them to be that big of a deal.  There are five different broods that show up in Indiana (where I grew up) so we got them frequently but it really didn’t change or effect much.

I just moved to NC and I believe we’re supposed to get these. We didn’t really have bugs in California! I’m so scared!

Ugh, I’m so glad I live in southern VA. We don’t get these. I made the mistake once of visiting family for a week in NOVA when the cicadas were really bad. It was so gross. I remember walking through this neighborhood that had cicadas covering their roads an inch, or two, deep, and more were diving at your face. It smelled and looked awful.

Look at this picture from the website haha. CICADA BRIDE
