I have a family name middle name, as does my sister, and I’ve always loved it. If we have a girl I will be passing one of them down ๐Ÿ™‚

Both Darling Husband and I have family names as middle names.  It is tradition in my family, but only sporadically so in his.  I want to continue the tradition if we have kids.

I have a family name as a middle name, as does my little sister. ๐Ÿ™‚ SO and I gave our daughter a middle name we both liked without realizing it was a name passed down to several members of my family, so I guess we accidentally kept a tradition going. ๐Ÿ˜›

So far, I’m the only one without a middle name, lol.  My sisters and my mother don’t have middle names either, but my nieces do.

Also, what exactly is a family name as a middle name?

I chose my own middle name.  It was the middle name of my two best friends at the time.

My original middle name was non-family anyway.

@travellingfool:  I guess mine is kind of a mix of both? My middle name is Joy and my Grandmother’s name is Joyce. I don’t know the whole story of my middle name, but I’m glad my parents decided on Joy instead of Joyce ๐Ÿ™‚ I am happy that it reminds me of my grandmother, but it’s also unique to me.

I was named after my grandmother (first and middle names). I’m torn between giving my daughter my middle name or just using something I think is pretty.

@travellingfool:  My middle name is May, and that’s a family thing, I’m not sure if I will give it to my daughter though because I want her name to be hers.

I think it depends on the name. Can you tell us what you are considering?

@prisigtr:  I also don’t have a middle name!  Well, not by birth.  I made my maiden name my middle name after I took my husband’s last name.

DH’s middle is a family name but for our own kids I’ll be ok with either a family name I like, (or a variation of it), or just a pretty name.

In our family our middle names all mean something.

I am the middle of 3 girls, my oldest sister’s middle name is my Mom’s name, my middle name is my Nana’s name (Dad’s Mom) and my youngest sister’s middle name is my Grandma’s name (Mom’s, Mom).

My middle name is one my parents liked. My brothers middle name is a family name.  My oldest son’s middle name is one I liked that fit with his first name.  My twins have middle names that are family names – my boys name is my paternal grandmothers maiden name, his twin sisters name is my maternal grandfathers middle name (spelled the same only pronounced differently for each gender).

I don’t have a family middle name but in the 6th grade I decided to switch my name to my middle name and it’s still the name I go by.  So I always tell my friends to pay close attention to the middle name because you never know what might happen!

This also means that I will have to drop my maiden name when I get married since I go by my middle name.
