If it is a boy, we are considering two different middle names. One is a family name (DH’s middle name and his grandfather’s name) that we think is perfectly fine but don’t love as a name by itself. We definitely don’t dislike it though. The other has no significance other than that we really like it. They both flow well with first and last name. So the question is…. go with the family name or the name we just like? What do you think?

Since it’s a middle name and not a first name, and you like the middle name, and it flows well with the first name, I think I would be inclined to use the family name.

I would use the family name

I go with whichever you like better (which sounds like the “random” non-family name).
While it is nice to use a family name if you both really like it, I wouldn’t use one over another name that we liked better.
ETA: My sister and I both have “random” middle names that our parents happened to like and we really like them too. I don’t “miss” not having a family tie to my middle name.

My mom’s middle name is a random name my grandma liked, and she hates it. I’d go with the family name.
