- Wedding: April 2012 - St. Philip Catholic Church/Arcadia Brewing Co.
I know there have been other threads on this, but I was wondering, how long did it take you to buy a house from caually browsing to moving in?
Mr. Aardvark and I were thinking about renting a house when baby Aardvark comes, but after a bit of web browsing/looking at our finances , it is clear that it would make MUCH more sense if we buy (even if it is not our forever house).
So, with a little one due in April, we are wondering if we are already way behind the eight ball if we want to be in a bigger place before it comes.

We had to sell the home that Hubby purchased before buying our first home together. We were browsing for months ahead of time but it didnt really matter because those homes were mostly off the market by the time we could make an offer on a home. Before viewing any homes we were preaproved for a loan and knew what are limits were. We basically had a month or less to find one in our small town and settle on a price. We narrowed it down to 2 homes, weighed the negative and postives and made an offer on the one we liked the most.
It can be done in a small time frame. Realtors wil let you know what similar houses are selling for and will base your offer off of that. I would recommend looking at homes in your price range for atleast a little bit before jumping into any offers, but the market may move either way any day really. Key is a trustworthy realtor I believe. 🙂 Make sure to find one that can play hardball if at all possible. I wish we would have found one like that! Hah

Really depends on the sellers and what kind of house are you looking for. When Darling Husband and I bought our house we looked and found a house and had it within 3 months from start of looking to purchasing to moving in.
The key is to not purchase a short sale or foreclosure, those can drag on forever.

We did it within three months, honestly it was mostly luck. We really loved about the tenth houses we saw, and it was at a great price so we immediately put in an offer, and after about a week of back and forth came to an agreement. Then we were very quick about getting our loan finalized, the inspection done, etc.
For us the main part was making our decisions and getting things done quickly – there were two houses before the one we purchased that we liked and got snatched up while we were considering making an offer on it. So when this house came along and was clearly our favorite, we put in an offer right away.
But it did still take a couple of months to get through the closing process even with us moving quickly on everything, so I’d recommend you start looking sooner rather than later!
