In total, it took us about 6 month to find a house (we were looking in Waukesha county), and of that time, 2 of it was waiting for the inspection etc. We could have been in something much sooner, but we were looking for very specific things, like a certain size yard and garage.

Get yourself a good realtor, that truly makes all the difference. The first one we had was a putz, but our second one was a saint. She found the house that we currently live in.

Interest rates are crazy low right now – it’s an awesome time to buy!

It was a little under 3 months from beginning to look until I closed, so I think you’ll have plenty of time to find something!  I don’t remember exactly how many houses I looked at, but I think it was in the 50+ range, and I was pretty aggressive about looking since my lease on my apartment was ending.

I could not believe how many houses had gross mystery smells that I wasn’t sure I could get rid of once I moved in, which is why I ended up looking at so many.

I’m very happy with the house I chose (which is a starter home, and not a forever home for me) and I’m happier still that I didn’t choose the other house I was considering, which was more expensive and would’ve made me a bit house poor.  It’s kind of crazy how much you can get approved for…the house I bought was 55k less than what I was pre-authorized for!

We were looking in the Madison area and it took us about 4 months of actively looking to find our house and then another month or so to close. The first couple months was us going on our own to open houses though. Once we felt pretty serious we found our realtor and really went to work, it didn’t take too long with her help.
