My last ball I wore a floor length chifon dress. It had an empire waist and was very flowy… I would say the shortest you can get away with is knee length, but I would say 90% of the girls were in long dresses.

here are a few links to dresses that would work for a military ball:

Make sure your dress isnt too revealing (low back, high slit, low neckline).

My dress was from BCBG, but I have a friend who just ordered her dress for a military ball off this site and seems pretty happy with it.

Good luck!

Actually, I was about to come one here and totally recommend Rent the Runway until I saw that you are already considering it. Nordstrom’s has great long gowns also. The reason I recommend RtR is because when I was on there looking for a gown for my close friend’s wedding most of the review pictures were from women who rented them for military balls.

Long for sure.

This is one of those occasions, when the style of men’s dress most definitely dictates what us women should wear.  You’ll find all the military personel will be in their dress uniforms, and any non-military men in tuxedos.  Therefore the corresponding appropriate attire for a lady is a long gown.

Military Balls are really classy … enjoy !!

just think elegant evening gown. I also suggest rent the runway. If you’re feeling adventurous my Maid/Matron of Honor got a dress for one of the balls she had to go to with her husband (he’s a marine and she had to go to like 3 last year! lol) off of lightinthebox. They have some wonderful looking elegant dresses on there.

PS… I never got to wear a dress to military balls because the all the units I was in made the females wear their uniforms (some units actually let us wear formal gowns instead).. and I always wore my ‘mess dress blues’ which looks like this

attractive? huh? lmao… (actually it’s not that bad) but boy do I envy how good guys look in their uniforms.. and then us ladies look oh so lovely in uniforms that are slightly altered men’s clothing….

I’ve been to 3 balls. 2 Marine Corps Balls, and 1 Army Corp Engineer Ball. So I should have you covered! I absolutely love them. So much fun! 🙂 My pictures are on a thumb drive… somewhere, but I’ll find them and post them tomorrow.

I’ve seen a lot of the prom-gone-wrong dresses, and you will, too. lol Go for long and nothing overly flashy or revealing. The dress on Rue is perfect!!

i’ve been to 2. number 3 is coming up in november!

as others have said, long gowns are usually what are worn. i’ve seen a few shorter dresses, but i always choose a long dress. definitely keep it classy- nothing too short or too revealing or too poufy.

i don’t have any pics, but the first dress i wore was a vintage dress that was my mom’s (she actually made it). it was a really bright reddish/hot pink color. i was worried it was going to be too brighy or flashy, but compared to other dresses, mine was very tame, lol. i love that dress!

the dress i wore last year was a bridesmaids dress from david’s bridal. i had to buy it for my sister-in-law’s wedding last october and i was determined to get my money’s worth out of that dress, haha. it was just a simple black dress with ruching on the bodice.

i haven’t even started shopping for this year’s dress, but i keep telling my husband i’m going to wear my wedding dress again, lol.

thrift stores are good place to look. you never know what you may find. and every once in a while i see formal gowns at places like marshalls and ross. i’m a bargain shopper, so those are always the places i go to first.

When I would go to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, I would always wear a floor-length gown. Close to what you posted last. All the men wore their uniforms and a few women did too. Always a lot of fun, I miss going.
