@fvsoccer:  I don’t know anything about those places (there is a Hickam near where I’m from, but I think it might not be the one you mean), but there are military boards and local boards where you might find someone who knows. Good luck!

@fvsoccer:  I grew up on Oahu, and my husband just explained to me where Hickam is, though I’ve never been on base before. The town that it’s in/by is a little bit sketchy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the actual base was nicer/safer. Living in Hawaii is extremely expensive (food, gas, electricity) though again I think a lot of that would be cheaper on base (I’m sure you know better than me how all that works). It’s situated more toward the mountains than the ocean, and is very close to another, nicer town (connected by the freeway) with a Walmart, Costco, places to eat, movies, etc. On the other side it’s not too far from the ocean (20 minutes would be my guess) and ends up on the north shore beaches, where are excellent, though can often be somewhat crowded.

I love living in Hawaii, but it’s a lot different from living on the Mainland. It’s hot and humid, pretty much all the time. Things just aren’t as nice (houses, stores, c hurches, everything), because 1) it’s hard to keep things nice and 2) people don’t really care (which is really nice once you get used to it). It can be a bit hard to be white (I’m half white and often felt a little different from a lot of people. My husband is completely white and grew up in Hawaii as well. He didn’t notice any problems). It’s hard to be away from your family (my mom’s family still lives on the Mainland), though you will probably get an upswing in visitors. All-in-all, Hawaii is pretty great and I would suggest trying it out if you get the chance 🙂 Good luck!
