I’m using “our song” as our first dance. It’s about long distance love, so it works pretty well. 🙂

What branch of the military is your SO a part of?

this is a great question! I was wondering the same myself.. all the military songs I know are about losing someone in the military or ones that are just not appropriate at all. I am interested in these answers too 🙂

I know that in the sixties, there are some pretty cool military-themed love songs. Not many of them are super slow (that I know of, at least).

Yeah, we just used “our” song too, which includes a line in the song that pretty sums up our relationship and having to be apart so much, due to the military.

I personally didn’t want any “military” songs at our wedding because back then, when I thought of the military, I thought about us being apart, which in turn made me sad…and that’s not what I wanted on our wedding day.

*Edit*  I guess I should add that our first dance/”our” song is Crazy Love by Michael Buble’.

I like Lynard Skynard’s “I need you.” It’s not specifically about the military, but it does talk about wanting to come home and wishing their loved one was near. My man used to play this for me all the time when he went away for a long time. It’s a nice song 🙂

“Ain’t no need to worry, ain’t no need to cry. ‘Cause I’ll be coming home soon, to keep you satified. You know I get so lonely, that I feel I can’t go on. And it feels so good inside babe, just to call you on the telephone. Oh baby, I love you, what more can I say? Oh baby, I need you, I miss you more every day.”

Would You Go With Me by Josh Turner is a good one!

It’s not specifically about the military, but it talks about going places together through everything.  Darling Husband and I used it as our wedding recessional.  It’s really fun and upbeat too!

“Wait for Me” Theory of a Deadman

While this is no Fiance and my First Dance Song, we still identify with it. =)

@Mrs.Vowrenewal: Hm. I don’t think I can name any NG-themed songs off the top of my head, but if I find one, I’ll let you know.

I know this thread is a little older, but my husband and I used Jack Johnson’s “Better Together” for our first dance.  It is a really sweet, uplifting song that reminds us that when he is deployed, everything will be alright.  Yes, we are both strong separately, but we are “better together” in each other’s lives.

The other song that I wanted to use was “Saltwater Room” by Owl City.  I love that song, and the lyrics really hit home because my husband is in the Navy.  It seemed to mimic exactly what I was feeling during his first deployment while I was waiting for his ship to return.

“Can you believe that the crew has gone, and wouldn’t let me sign on?  All my islands have sunk in the deep, and I can hardly relax or even oversleep.  But I feel warm with your hand in mine as we walk along the shoreline.  I guess we’ll never know why sparrows love the snow.  We’ll turn off all of the lights and set this ballroom aglow.  Time together isn’t ever quite enough.  When you and I are alone, I’ve never felt so at home.  What will it take to make or break this hint of love?  We need time…only time…”  It has more of a nautical theme than what you might be looking for with the National Guard, but it still speaks of distance and love overcoming it.  It is still a very cute song!

We’re using “Faithfully” by Journey- it’s about the guy being on the road for his music career, but it’s really similar to how our relationship is going to be for the first few years that we’re married, and when he’s deployed.

Highway run
Into the midnight sun
Wheels go round and round
You’re on my mind

Restless hearts
Sleep alone tonight
Sending all my love along the wire
They say that the road
Ain’t no place to start a family
Right down the line it’s been you and me
And loving a music (err… military) man
Ain’t always what it’s supposed to be
Oh Girl
You stand by me
I’m forever yours
Faithfully

Circus life
Under the big top world
We all need the clowns to make us smile

Through space and time
Always another show
Wondering where I am lost without you
And being apart ain’t easy on this love affair
Two strangers learn to fall in love again
I get the joy of rediscovering you
Oh girl
You stand by me
I’m forever yours
Faithfully
