Also have you thought about contacting a local university or art college with photography students. You can interview them see their work, and they proabably charge less or nothing if the need pictures for their portfolio.

@LindsayMaree:  I know it’s technically for a wedding, but I wouldn’t approach the photographers like it’s a wedding. Maybe tell them it’s a family get together. You don’t need a full 8 hour block or anything like that. I had one photographer I was in love with that did portraits of my friends daughter for a few hours for $200, when I asked her how much for a wedding, the packages started at $2000 for a 6 hour block. What?!?!

@LindsayMaree:  In your e-mails I would just be straightforward with any potential photog. Let them know you are looking for an elopement package, if they have one. And also keep in mind the day of week it is when you are sending your e-mails. It is wedding season right now, so if you send an e-mail late Thurs or Friday, it probably won’t get answered for a few days. good luck with your search!!

it definitely sounds like you’ll just need a photographer for around 2 hours- even if you say “wedding”- i would be honest and just tell them its a simple courthouse ceremony with some photos- it will probably price-wise be along the lines of an engagement photo session and maybe cost around 200-400!

what day of the week/time is it?

thats the only issue i could think of- someone may be hesistant to book you for like 5pm on a saturday, as they could probably book a 10 hour wedding for thousands of dollars that day.

good luck! let us know if you find someone!

ETA: i just saw your date and saw that its a friday. i’m sure since your date is getting close you’d have no problem finding someone. if they’re not already booked for friday i doubt they’d find another wedding to shoot!

I totally understand what you’re going through, LindsayB!  I live in the UP and we are going to have a courthouse elopement.  I found a couple photographers whose work I liked and sent them emails saying I needed a photographer for 2 hours on X date in X town to shoot our courthouse wedding and to shoot some portraits of us afterwards at the same location.  Then I asked if they were interested and available, then for rates.  (I also said I liked their work and how I found them.)

Being closer to the date is actually a good thing!  I wasn’t able to book the photographer until now (for a late August date) because of course bigger, more $$$ wedding jobs are her preference.

@September29:  We cross-posted. Yes!  A weekday really helps! The photographers who got back to me are charging around $200/hr for what I wanted, which is their engagement session rate. This includes all images.

Ooh, that’s a little far out from her (she’s in Grand Rapids), but it might be worth a shot. I’ll PM you.
