I’m due to have my Mirena removed in a couple weeks. I’ve had it slightly less than a year, if that makes any difference. I just wanted to get some feedback about other user’s experiences after coming off this BC method. How long did it take your cycles to regulate? And, if you had it removed for TTC purposes, how long did it take you to get pregnant? We’re starting TTC this fall, and I’m hoping my body regulates w/in 4-5 months after removal. Thanks! 🙂

I had the Mirena IUD for just over two years, and didn’t have my period for pretty much the entire time it was in! Had it removed in November 2010, and had some light bleeding for a couple of days right after it was removed, and then again two weeks later which I believe was my first real period after removal.
From that point onwards – my cycles have been quite regular at 28 days with ovulation around the 13th or 14th day (I’m charting on FF and using OPKs). However, my periods have been short with only one day of full flow, and a couple days of light flow/spotting. Not sure if it’s a side effect of the IUD, or just that I’m getting older
We’re on our 5th cycle of TTC and no pregnancy yet. I just started the TWW (two week wait) so we’ll see if this is our month.
Of course, this is just my personal experience. My GP said it could take 3-6 months for my cycle to regulate, and to come back and see him if things hadn’t returned to normal within 6 months.
If I’m not pregnant by May, I’ll be heading back in for a follow-up as I’m a bit older (36) and don’t want to wait too long!
Good Luck with your TTC journey!

Thanks for all the information! It was very helpful, and encouraging to hear that it didn’t take you too long to become regular again. I too will be charting and using OPKs (at first to double check that I’m ovulating and then again in the fall while TTC). I hope you don’t have to follow up with your doc at the 6 month mark (because you’re pg!) 🙂 Good luck!
