I’ve used Mirena for birth control for 7 or 8 years now; I’m on my second one. I have never had any issues with it whatsoever. I find it really convenient because I’m forgetful and this is something that *I* can’t screw up. I haven’t experienced any weight gain (that I can attribute to the IUD, anyway!). I haven’t had a period in years; the first time I had the IUD I started getting very light periods again toward the end of the 5 year period, and then since I got the new one (2009), I’ve had none. I love it.

I had Mirena put in in Spring 2010, after being on BC pills for 10 years. I needed something that was a low dose, and that my body would not react to in a negative way. My GP referred me to a OBGYN as I had not had children and they are not generally recommended for women who have not given birth. I had it inserted, no major issues, I was VERY crampy and sore the first 24 hours, and then I was fine. I stayed home from work for one day of, and 1 day after. Everything was great! I felt great, my sex drive increased, negaitve side affects decreased etc. THEN (and I am one of those few who has complications) after just over a year I started having allot of pain on my left side. I thought it was just cramps, or indigestion etc. It did not go away. I tried to get into my GP or ORGYN but I could not. The OBGYN recommended for me to go to urgent care or ER as it could have implanted, or puntured or if I had an eptopic. So after a few hours in the urgent care, and back for an ultrasound the next morning, they discovered that it was slightly implanted on my left side AND I had a 4 cm cyst on my right ovary. So I had it removed asap, (hurt more then going in). I felt instantly better, except for the cyst pain. I have not had several cysts, but that is most likely from being off of traditonal BC and actually ovulating now.

Did I like it prior to the complications- yes. I have 2 close friends who have one in and they have had no issues. It was just not for me. My uterus was to small (according the my OBGYN)

I’ve never had a baby, they had difficulty placing it but all is ok now.  I had some cramping and spotting for a full three months.  It was so annoying.  But overall I’m much happier not to worry about BC.

I’ve had Mirena for almost a year and have not had any side effects other than the normal spotting and cramping in the beginning. I am actually having it taken out on Monday because we are going to try and start TTC immediately after getting married and I want my body to get ready. I went with Mirena because I had an issue that IUD’s were a suggested treatment for. It worked!! I also had a 5 cm. cyst that was causing pain on my left ovary that they were considering removing, but it shrunk within 2 months of getting the Mirena- not really sure if the Mirena is responsible for shrinking the cyst, but I do know that I had pain for over a year from the cyst and it finally went away after getting the Mirena. Mirena has really been like a miracle for my body.

Love my Mirena, I still have cramping around that time of the month but no flow. So happy with Mirena I’ll definitely go the IUD route again when 5 years is up.

@StuporDuck:  I’ve had mine removed (and had one expell within ten seconds of being put in, before I got my new one) and it’s no worse than the feeling of them putting it in.

Had it for 5 years, loved it.  🙂  It hurt like crazy going in (never been pregnant) and not as bad coming out, but it wasn’t pain-free. Going in I was crampy for a couple days, and coming out I was fine the next day, though.  For 5 years I had almost no periord, maybe a cramp or two, and no babies.  It was awesome.  I got sick of the menstrual migraines, though, which is why I didn’t get another.  It doesn’t change your cycle like BC does, so I went back on the 3-month pill to help avoid those.  I also did gain weight, I was always hungry.

I have mine since november almost 6 months now and i like it. The only thing that is a little different is the fact that most mornings i get some pain on my stomach and it wakes me up, it’s an undescribeable discomfort, but i never did anything about it, no ultra sound, but i haven’t had that for the past weeks so i guess is fine. I love not having to worry about this or that, so far this month no period. Didn’t hurt to get put in at all.
