I’ve had one for nearly the full 5 years and I love it! but it’s almost time for me to get it replaced and I’m getting nervous. putting it in is the most painful part. I’m hoping that maybe it will hurt less this time.
any ladies out there get their IUD replaced? did it hurt less the second time around?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but mine hurt just as much on the second insertion as it did on the first. Both times, it was so painful that I passed out and had a seizure. (I have epilepsy, so I’m predisposed to having seizures, so don’t let that specific aspect freak you out. But the whole passing out part – good lord, the insertion sucks.)

@redherring: oh my god, that’s awful! I’m sorry.
I got mine placed one week ago. it did hurt just as much the 1st time. however, I was prepared. my doctor gave me lorazepam to help me stay calm. I would highly recommend that!! I also took 800mg of ibuprofen 1/2 hour before the appointment, so after the IUD was inserted, the cramps went away fast. finally, I did breathing exercises –like the kind you do when you’re giving birth. that helped distract me and relax me!
the good news is that I only had minor cramps the first day but I felt just fine. now it’s only a few days later and I have absolutely no cramps at all.
I am feeling moody unfortunately. I’m sure that’s to be expected. since the old worn out IUD has been replaced with a new one, there’s probably a flood of fresh hormones going into my system. I’m not concerned, I imagine it will level out soon. maybe if it goes on for more than a few weeks, I’ll ask my doctor. but for now it seems normal.

I had my copper one taken out and the Mirena put back in, and I have to say that taking it out was totally not as bad as having it put in! But then having the Mirena put in did hurt just as bad as the first one 🙁

I had the mirena put in 2 days ago but not without a month of research and talking to all my friends that have had it put in. I am 22 and have never had a child.
I talked to my gyno and told her how much of pansey I am and that I haven’t had a child.
She prescribed me Valium to relax me before I would come in and 800mgs of Advil. I told her that’s fine and I wanted a LOCAL anastetic or she can forget the whole thing. She said no problem. =)
So I went in, she made sure to check everthing out first and then said she you are going to feel a little sting from the needle. No problem with that, it just felt weird where that sting was lol. and then she did the other side and gave me a magazine to read because we had to wait 10 mins for the local to kick in.
She came back and got the sound thing to messure me and then the Mirena. She said I was goint to feel a little pinch. I felt nothing!!! I was like thank god!!!! And then the Mirena was inserted and felt pain for a good 5 seconds lol. And then she said it’s over! I got a little dizzy from the shock of the whole 5 second pain so she had me lay there for another 10 mins. After that I was good to walk and drive home.
Not gonna lie, I did cramp the rest of the day. But it stopped at night? I thought that was weird but I was thankful because I could sleep. But I am doing great now. And the spotting has almost stopped too. =)
MAKE SURE YOU DEMAND A LOCAL!!! if they say no, just go to another place.
