I really love the look of mismatched bridesmaids and as my girls are scattered around the country (and we can’t shop together), it makes sense to pick a vendor and let them pick a dress they like!
I have picked a color and fabric from David’s Bridal and will have the four ladies pick a different dress each. I’ve told my 3 bridesmaids to pick short dresses but had originally thought my maid of honor (who is VERY tall btw) that she could go short/mid/long so she stands out a little bit as the maid of honor.
What do you think about this? (Different dresses, same color, possibly 1 in a long dress for MOH). Anyone have pics to share? Specifically where the MOH’s dress is a little different from the other maids?

MsKnitter: Another thing to consider, given that all your choices involve the same color, is the fabric. Chiffon and satin, both in the same color, may photograph differently.

julies1949: Sorry if I didn’t specify! They will be in the same color and in chiffon 🙂 There is a difference in color between the satin “guava” color at DB, and the chiffon one so for simplicity’s sake. They will all be in chiffon in the same color.
I’m more curious about what you all think about length and your experiences with mismatched dresses w/ a Maid/Matron of Honor in a slightly different style.

MsKnitter: There are lots of pics online showing bridesmaids wearing the same color and different style dresses.
You can also search maid of honor in long dress, bridesmaids in short dress.

I think they should all wear the same length. To distinguish the Maid/Matron of Honor I’d be more likely to go with a different but related color rather than a different length. IMO the length has to do more with the level of formality and/or time of year and I think the level of formality of the dresses in the bridal party should be equivalent.

I love mismatched, but only when they’re all the same general length!

We’re having mismatched but all the same length. To distinguish the Maid/Matron of Honor, we’re adding a little pop of red to her dress. Maybe you could add a coloured sash or something for your MOH?
Honestly I would find having one girl in a different length a bit distracting. It sounds bad but I would just assume she doesn’t want to show her legs for some reason :/

Thanks so much ladies! We decided on short dresses for all of them. The MOH’s might be a slightly asymetrical deal but will be short overall so I think will help her stand out a bit.
I appreciate the feedback!

I just did it for my wedding. I loved it. They all wore black chiffon any thing they wanted. I think they all felt good in the dress and you couks still
tell they were in the wedding and I did all long. I think it looks so good!

I have never been a fan of mixing lengths. Pick a different way to make her stand out if you want.

I’m doing the mismatched thing as well. I gave each bridesmaid a box wrapped with ribbon when I asked them to be in my wedding and the ribbon is the color of dress that I want them to TRY to match (Tiffany blue). I told them to get as close as possible to the color of the ribbon and chose a short dress (above the knee). My sister in law actually already owns a dress that she plans on wearing so it makes it super easy. To tie it all together, they’re all going to wear nude shoes and obviously carry bouquets. I thought about having them do the same color from David’s Bridal, but I did notice that the colors look VERY different depending on the fabric. I don’t think it would bother me so much because I like the mismatched look, but I decided against DB because I wanted the girls to be able to wear something they already own, or pick something within in their budget (one of my BMs is a single mom with three kids). All of my bridesmaids are beautiful, but they all have very different body types (short, tall, huge boobs, etc.) I want them to find dresses that flatter their figures and that they feel comfortable in. I’m sure we’ve all been in a situation where we didn’t feel confident because we didn’t love our outfit, and I never want my girls to think of my wedding that way. I think letting them pick their dress is a great idea and I think your bridesmaids will agree as well. Best of luck for a beautiful wedding party!

I am also doing this! I chose “Apple” red from David’s. I wished I had given instruction on which material too. 1 bridesmaid went and bought a dress in chiffon, so now they all have to be chiffon. Which I… am not a fan of. But whatever. So the others picked different dresses in that material and colour. It was a bit stressful getting it all organized and still trying to please everyone (surprisingly) but as of yesterday, all 4 bridesmaids have bought their dresses (yay one more thing off the list haha). And they all really love their dresses, so that’s what I wanted to hear. 🙂
Oh I should add, the 3 bridesmaids are in knee-length dresses and the Maid/Matron of Honor is in a knee-length high-low type dress. So she will stand out a bit more which I am happy with. Also she loves to rock super high heels so that will look great with her dress.
A bit stressful to organize but in the end I am happy and excited to see the results on the day of!
