@Jennlee:  White House Black Market? It is really difficult without seeing photos of the outfits you described.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about all the black.  Both my mother and my husband’s mother wore solid black gowns at the wedding, and no one said anything!

@Jennlee:  If she’s comfortable and looks nice then she should be ok. My Mother-In-Law paired a long black skirt with a black top (had some silver in it). She got her stuff at JC Penny and TJ Maxx. I didn’t care that she wore all black and she certainly wasn’t making a statement. She chose black becuase it was slimming.

Your Mum is 70.  I think you’re doing the right thing giving her lots of options but when it comes to decision time let her go in whatever she feels most comfortable in.  Could you compromise and find more formal black trousers?  The lacy top sounds lovely. Could there be a reason she’s chosen black cotton?  Worried about being too warm/sweating?  Could you get shoes dyed to match the top she chooses to ‘pull it all together’?

Your mom probably has a sweater or blazer or something she could put on top of the second outfit to dress it up if you’re nervous. But that sounds like the best option, assuming it’s comfortable for her.

Try Talbot’s or Ann Taylor Loft too…I’d say go for outfit #3 if you can’t find anything.

I love textured suiting, especially for the blazer. See if you can’t find a textured coat (light tweed) with plainer pants (wool gab) in the same color…it looks so smart!
