My fiance and I are at our witt’s end. We really, truly, dislike wedding DJs and are struggling to find a DJ that’s based in NJ/NYC who will not only be open to our suggestions but also has similar taste in alternative/ non traditional wedding music. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Interested in seeing suggestions! We’re struggling hard with this too. Every DJ we find is way too over the top and not our style at all. We’re starting to lean towards a wedding band because of this. Silver Arrow Band seems pretty cool if you end up going that route!

I just booked DJ Ali Gruber for our wedding. She is based in Kingston, NY. I am not sure how far she will travel for weddings, Kingston is about 100 miles north of NYC, but she is worth contacting. She spins vinyl in addition to her digital collection, which is pretty awesome. Here’s her website https://www.djalihudsonvalley.com/about and here’s an article about her: https://offbeatbride.com/new-york-wedding-dj/
Alternatively, Julie Jakolat is also based in Kingston and is another non-typical DJ. I initially contacted her, but she was booked for my wedding date and recommended Ali to me. http://www.differentspin.net/differentspin/DJ_Julie.html I love that both of them don’t have crazy light shows, give out party favors, no over the top cheesy announcements, etc. Both of them seem invested in getting to know you and your music tastes, unlike some other DJs.

KatenKev : Are you open to a band? There are so many great bands in the area who give such a classier feel

Look into Scratch- it’s a management company based out of Manhattan. They manage professional, full times DJs (it’s those accountant by day, DJ as a weekend side gig types that typical bring the cheese). You speak with an agent, discuss your likes, dislikes, spell out exactly what your are looking for. Based on this call, they send you 3 or so DJ profiles with resumes and sample mixes- if you don’t like what they send you initially, they will send additional profiles better tailored to your tastes. If you find an DJ you are interested in, you can ask the DJ make you a personalized mix based on your specific tastes- almost as an “audition”. From there, you can proceed with booking. It is a comprehensive yet very straight forward process, that is not nearly as time intensive as I probably make it seem. We LOVED our DJ and got exactly what we hoped for!

I believe Michael is Hudson Valley-based, but from the website it looks like he does the city as well. He was phenomenal, I can’t say enough good things about him. Zero cheese, followed our request list but also knew exactly what to play when. We had the danciest wedding I think I’ve ever been to.
