Sounds like you  are doing all the right things and are  really with her in her loss. It will all come out OK I think, in a couple of weeks she  will be able to tell you what she is able to  do .

Just don’t , even in your mind , use the term ‘demoted’ . She is not an employee. 

ETA oh  and don’t beat yourself up if you catch  yourself  feeling a bit cross at the  ‘timing’ of this sad event.

jclc1990 :  oh definitely don’t “demote”. Unless she steps down, or declines to attend (both unlikely), just keep her as Maid/Matron of Honor. I personally see no issue if she did do either of those things with asking another bridesmaid to do Maid/Matron of Honor things at wedding for symmetry purposes. It depends on your friend group and how they see those things, really. I think many people would understand the circumstances— the MOH’s dad died, it’s not a falling out. I guess if I were a bridesmaid I wouldn’t see it as being a “back up bestie”. But if that’s a risk in your group then don’t I guess.
