Fiance and I went with MoissaniteCo for my first ring. It was a custom design, but there are issues with it and from some of the things that I’ve read on here and other sites, I do not foresee MoissaniteCo being very accommodating when it comes to making the necessary repairs. So we’re looking at finding another custom jeweler & moissanite retailer (Might as well upgrade!).
I’ve done a quick Google search for jeweler that works with moissanite and does custom work, but didn’t come up with much, while etsy is flooded with them. Do you have any recommendations for custom jewelers who are also reputable moissanite retailers (who won’t rip me off price-wise)?

Schubach’s is reputable. A lot of bees have worked with them. We got a quote from them when I was still deciding what I wanted but did not end up going with them.

evie24: I know it’s a longshot, but if you happen to be located in Central Illinois I know a jeweler that does great work, and I was in there last night so I could get my ring sized, and my SO mentioned that we were going with Moissanite, and they told him they had just started carrying them and they actually will do custom work with them as they are becoming much more popular. Unfortuantely, they are a small business with only 2 locations. Flora Gems – one in Champaign-Urbana, IL, and one in Decatur, IL.

desss: Did you find their quote reasonable?

@evie24 what part of the country are you in? I got mine custom by a small family-owned shop, but that won’t do you any good unless you’re on the east coast.

evie24: I had David Klass do my custom ring. I just bought the stone from Moissaniteco. and had them send it to his office. He does great work, but not sure if he sources moissanite.

evie24: It was pretty reasonable. If you have an idea of what you want, you might reach out to a couple of jewelers you narrow it down to and see what ballpark you’re in price wise. I know Schubach’s does an excellent job hand picking stones for their customers based on what they request.

Fire and Brilliance on etsy are amazing, I cannot recommend them enough! I had such terrible experiences with jewellers before them that i was a difficult client from the get go but they were fantastic to work with.

evie24 : I second David Klass – he made my custom wedding band with moissanite and lab created emeralds.

I just came across J Hollywood Designs on Instagram and looked her up on Etsy as well. She has great reviews and I’ve been messaging her about some Moissanite earrings and she has been extremely responsive and helpful!

Rosado’s Box has amazing reviews and a physical store: https://www.etsy.com/listing/186349239/blake-9x7mm-14kt-rose-gold-oval-fb (I think I recall reading that the physical store and the online store have a different name, but that it’s the same people).
We ultimately decided, though, to go with the cheaper company (really just one independent jeweler) for a custom ring based off of this one: https://www.etsy.com/listing/247674817/7x9mm-21ct-charles-colvard-moissanite Still had a lot of good reviews, but not as many as Rosado’s Box and it’s coming from China. I know there are a lot of issues with ordering clothing from China, but there were so many great reviews here. We do not have the ring yet, but the seller has mailed it on time with a tracking number, and it’s just a few hours away in customs in Cincinatti, per DHL (the shipping company — DHL is pretty common for international shopping) for 3 day shipping. I don’t think the boyfriend has decided whether to show the ring to me before proposing (to ensure it’s up to snuff), but I’m sure I’ll be posting it here whenever I can. 🙂
The thing about Etsy reviews is that you have to have purchased an item from the store through Etsy to even be allowed to review. So if Etsy doesn’t see a monetary transaction, it wont let the person review the store. Now, if someone was really clever and shady, they could “buy things from themselves” and that way review themselves, but just check the photos that people post in the reviews section — you’ll be able to tell if the hand is different, is the photo quality different (indicating different cameras) and background etc. Also, do the reviews all sound like they were written by the same person or not? You can see that the reviews of Julian’s Studio are all super different: https://www.etsy.com/shop/JulianStudio/reviews
I think Rosado’s Box is a safe bet. We decided the small risk to go with Julian Studios, though, was worth the much lower price. I also think that Julian Studios uses a classic Moissanite, but Rosado’s Box uses one of the premium Moissanites that has had extra treatment to make it more colorless. All Moissanites come from Charles and Colvard so you don’t have to worry about the same issues with diamonds (i.e. is it REALLY an S1 whatever crazy standard), but they do have their classic line, and their Forever One, and I think one or two others.
Ping me in a week or two if you don’t see me post the ring. I have a sneaking suspicion that the boyfriend is going to try to propose fully soon after it comes in (though maybe after finals), so he both gets his surprise that he wants but also is within the amount of time we have to return it if there’s a problem.
