Well, I have yet to see a moissanite in person.  BUT…

The first time I went browsing the e-ring section of a store, I was ooohhing and ahhhing at the diamonds. The ones (I think) most people think of when we think of diamonds.  Then the sales lady comes over, and starts trying to sell me on somthing, “nicer.”

Long story short, she pulls out the one $30,000 perfectly flawless 2 ct. diamond the store had.  And guess what?  It looked smokey/grey/clear!  I kid you not!  It looked exactly like those moissanite videos (I’ve watched them too).  I was SHOCKED, I think my jaw was on the jewelry counter. I had NO clue that was what they were “supposed” to look like.

After doing a bunch more research on different websites, I think that it is because most people do NOT buy $30,000 rings.  Not to knock anyones rings on here, or in the world (heck my engagement ring ended being like $250 after tax), but I think we are so used to seeing the “lower” quality gems, that we don’t even know what a really high end diamond looks like.

Plus, I have heard sooo many people say that they just look like really great diamonds.  So, I would think that people would think your guy is ANYTHING but cheap!

ETA:I really don’t remember the exact price of that mega expensive diamond….I was in such shock…and I just remember knowing it was very very very expensive.  $30,000 was just the number that came to me when writing this.

I have an Amora Moissanite from MoissaniteCo and it is not at all smokey or dull or cloudy ever. Seriously. And it is ESPECIALLY sparkly and bright and clear in sunlight. I’m not sure where you are seeing these pictures and videos of Amoras that are smokey in sunlight, but sunlight is actually what makes the Amora sparkle the most. it sparkles like crazy all the time and is so so so beautiful and clear. Not cloudy or dull at all.

Also if you are worried about it being obviously not a diamond, you need not worry. I had my ring looked at by a professional gemstone identifyer/ jeweler and after looking at it under her scope, she identified it as a “very high quality diamond”. Also, there have been other Bees who’s moissanite have even passed as a diamond under an actual diamond tester. So I don’t think you need to worry about your friends or family noticing that it is not a diamond.

I originally picked out a set from Scott Kay at Helzbergs. I have a friend that works in the jewelry industry and seeing the mark up that Helzberg had done to the setting itself and wedding band was ABSOLUTELY sickening!! Its actually cheaper to go completely custom.

@omjessi:  Of course! πŸ™‚

As far as what the diamond in the store looked like, this video from youtube is a VERY good example, and also why I was shocked at the diamond… (this is a moissy vid, but when she brings it out in the sun, this is the color I think we may both be speaking of…correct me if I am wrong)

I still can’t believe the price… but I’m sure she pulls it out for everyone… think of the commission!

It sucks that you are going to have to deal with family like that.  I know I’ll get some looks, mine ended up being a pink amethyst.  But I don’t care, because I love her!  I have named her Rose (and she isn’t even on my finger yet…lol).  But, I think a moissy will shut your family up pretty nicely!

@omjessi:  When I read your post, I immediatly thought of that video.  How funny, yes…maybe they are a bit more white if they are Amora… hmm…  It’s just hard not to be able to see them in person first to see the differences.  Maybe you would be better off going for the Amora, which looks whiter(according to PP), and everyone will think it is a diamond becuase that is what most people are used to seeing.  Easy peasy!

And you are right!  It is about the person!  And me and that person love to go on fabulous trips and would rather pay for those, then for a huge…. very expensive… ring, that me, knowing my luck, would damage or lose in a week.

I ordered an amora moissanite stone from moissaniteco. It was so beautiful… I like moissanite more than diamonds because it is so sparkly!

btw, you can order a stone from moissaniteco and return it within 14 days with no restocking fee.
