While looking at e-rings today with my boyfriend I casually asked the jeweler about moissanite (if they carried them, etc.). She promptly looked at me funny and told me that moissanites are illegal. I didn’t argue with her, but my boyfriend seemed to believe her. Am I crazy?? Are moissanites illegal??

hahaha that is hilarious. I’m sorry, it is funny because it is so ridiculous. Moissanite isn’t illegal lol It is just as legal as diamonds are… maybe even more so.

Man, the things the diamond industry will say to try and keep up their illusion…
If you haven’t read this article, I highly recommend it. It’s quite old but everything is only more true today. It’s very long but the first 5 or 6 pages are the most interesting and a great read.

Considering how popular they are on this board I would have to venture NO. Unless there are a lot of sneaky jewelers out there!

Maybe the jeweler thought you were saying he was trying to pass off a moissanite as a diamond – that would be illegal.
If he’s just saying it’s illegal to own a moissanite, I’d say you shouldn’t talk to jewelers about it. They don’t like gorgeous alternatives encroaching on their business. I’ve heard stories from multiple people where their jewelers went on anti-moissanite rants.

Unless they’re secretly made of meth, I’m going to go with no, not illegal. That sales associate is clearly mistaken.

@AlwaysSunny: I live in SC and there are some jewelers around here that will sell and set moissanite, so I figured I would ask this jeweler. Didn’t realize I would have to listen to her lies/rant to get a simple no we don’t sell moissanite 🙂

No! It is not illegal!
Charles & Colvard have had a patent on moissanite for over a decade, so others making it right now would be patent infringement, and BTD is challenging patents so they can make the Amora Gem without infringing patents….but it is not illegal.
A jeweler passing of moissanite as a diamond to consumers? Yeah, that would be illegal.
Please do not go back to that sales lady, she is definitely uninformed (and worse)!

@UpstateCait: That’s awesome.
No, they are not illegal. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She should visit us sometime. 🙂

@WillyNilly: Yes, I edited to add an “and worse” to imply the same.
