No one’s ever asked. And I think only a rude person would. That being said, I did tell my family members and close friends, simply because they are the only ones to whom I feel comfortable gushing about my ring. Oh and I told a friend who is shopping for an engagement ring for his girlfriend.

@ashleyyyg: argh I hate that, though luckily I’ve never encountered it in real life. Yes, moissanite is real silicon carbide crystal! Would you ask if a blue sapphire was a “real” blue diamond? Ugh.

If they don’t ask, don’t tell – otherwise be proud, they may even be impressed of the likeness to a diamond!

Nobody has EVER asked, but if someone compliments my “diamond” I just say thank you and do not correct them. I think it’s rude to correct a compliment anyway, plus I don’t feel like explaining my decision or debating with friends or stangers about moissanite vs diamonds to everyone who says “What a pretty diamond ring!”.

Aside from a select few family members we haven’t announced that it’s a moissanite and do not feel obligated to do so.

Though if anybody asked if it was a diamond I’d certainly tell them it’s a moissanite. I wouldn’t feel okay with outright lying about it, plus I truly LOVE my moissy and am proud to wear it!

I don’t have Moissy, but I do have Asha so – same assumptions, same questions, same look as diamond, same company basically, lol.

Generally, it’s a don’t ask, don’t tell kind of approach. I don’t go around announcing it just like I wouldn’t go around announcing the specs of my diamond if I had one “Oohh it’s flawless, 1 carat, FJIFJI3493943 color.” <– Yeah, I don’t remember if F’s or I’s or VS whatever are the best, so I improvised. Lol.

If someone that I am close to asks specifically, sure I’d tell them about the other options out there – I’ve had some people react VERY strongly about their preference for diamonds, and some react in a way that is more open to alternatives. The more open ones I share our choice with. Others, whatever. They aren’t going to change their mind just because I did something.

I dont have a moissanite, but I’ve never heard a compliment that actually calls out the stone.  People have said “gorgeous ring”  “wow”  “did you see this ROCK” .. but no one has every said, what a nice diamond.

I know when I was wearing my cubic zirconia promise ring, I did correct people.  I don’t see a point in claiming it is a diamond when it really isn’t.  A stone is a stone and I am proud to wear anything!  I would definitly tell people, especially if people were impressed so they could look into it.

When we were looking into Mossainite we told his mother about the idea. She FLIPPED out saying that NO she must have a diamond! She can’t possibly not have a diamond! Engagement rings are diamond! Every girl wants a diamond!

Well I didn’t get a diamond, but we never had to tell her it wasn’t diamond she just assumed it was. I let her think what she wants because no one questions it. I even tell jewelers that it’s mossainite because I don’t care. My family has never asked if its real…they were just in awe over it.

I have two right hand moissy rings, and people DO ask if they are diamonds.

Perhaps I have rude aquaintances and friends!

I am honest, I see no reason not be.

If they ask about the stone, I tell them its actually a Moissanite and my friends and family know (and love!) my choice! If they compliment my “rock” or ring in general, I just smile and say thank you! I work with a guy who used to be a jeweler and he adores my ring AND knows its a Moissy!
